e70 M SPORT active steering issue, $5k repair!

The car is giving me active steering warning on the dash. My mechanic did a code scan and got code 6147 MOTOR BLOCKING. He brought it to BMW and was told that the rack is bad. The cost for the rack with active steering alone is a $4300!

I tried looking for a used part on Ebay but there aren't any available with active steering. With new parts and labor, i'm looking at a ~$5k repair, which is probably half the value of the car. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do?

Yes, use car-parts.com and search for a salvage rack. This searches junk yards all across the country. Find the part number on real oem, then buy a salvaged unit and get it installed. The salvege unit will be cheaper.

What is the car doing that made you want to replace the rack? If it’s not too bad live with it, and sell it.

Try one of remanufactured racks like this one, or just ask one of your parts shop to get you one of those.

Go to realoem.com and type in the last 7 of your VIN, then lookup under steering the exact part number you need. It will most likely be part number 32106799622 which is the most common active steering rack for the E70. You can pickup for around 1800 rebuilt, or if you are a gambling man, you can try your luck on ebay, used units are around 700. I would highly advise getting a rebuilt unit. They do show backordered at FCP so if you need it fast, best dealer price I could find is below.

The part # for the car 32106858488 according to realoem. The problem is that I cant find this part anywhere for less than $3k. The first link you sent has the old part number which I think may work, but it's on backorder...
