BMW X6 45d Tri-Turbo
Apparently in autumn next year, BMW will showcase a X6 with Tri-turbo Performance Diesel with 354hp and loads of torque! It promises to be a badass!
If the rumour is true, would you rush out to trade your 30d, 35d or 40d, or 50i for it? |

Turbos are more fuel efficient. And seems like that's all BMW cares about right now. Although rumors of a 45d tri-turbo have been circulating for a few months now, what's the point? I'd imagine the fuel efficiency would be quite a bit less than the 40d, which starts to defeat the purpose of diesels. But 350hp and (I'm guessing 500 lb-ft of torque) would be just crazy coming out of a 3.0-liter diesel.

I doubt that the 45d would be much less fuel efficient as compared to the 40d. 3 turbo's means that they may probably space them out more in terms of size - small, medium and large. As compared to now which is small and medium-large. So it may even be more efficient - untill you floor it of course!
BMW will be miles ahead of their competition - audi and mercedes - which are using heavy V8's to develop less power and higher fuel consumption. i assume BMW has patents on their turbo system in sequence - as opposed to parallel - explaining why audi and mercedes cannot copy them? |

the 40d is still a little bit behind merc and audi's v8 diesel engines in terms of power and torque, but has a lot of + in all the other ways... it's by far the best 3l diesel engine from the market! maybe the 3l triturbo will be called 50d
however in Europe the LCI X5 and X6 equiped with the new 3l diesel engines are by far the best in class but that 3l triturbo diesel will make the concurence to take the ostrich position |

Interesting. I just checked BMW UK, and compared the 730d and 740d...exact same city consumption, 0.2L/100km more in highway driving. Do people in Europe actually buy the X6 35i and the 740i? There's really no point - you get the exact same performance with much better fuel economy. Sure it's probably not as much fun due to the lower redline and the way the engine functions (never driven a diesel), but I think the fuel savings outdo those factors. I hope BMW starts bringing some more diesel models to North America.

Actually you are not far from the truth. 70% of the 7 series sold in europe are in fact diesels. Not only due to the lower fuel consumption but also due to the higher torque which results in nicer every day driving.
But of course you also always still have the petrol heads who love the high revving V8's and V12's - and they stick to the petrol. I personally love torquey engines so i stick to diesel. |

Oh I see... in America we tend to capitalize L when it refers to Liters in an engine and almost always put a .X afterwards even if there is nothing there. Like 3.0L. Also in arial fonts a lower case "l" looks similar to a capitalized I -- so it looks more like the way we refer to the number of cylinders in an inline engine, i.e. I6, I4.

Well, if BMW achieves similar 0-60 numbers as the Q7 V12 then they would seriously put the Q7 V12 to shame - because they would do it with a 3L engine and a much more fuel efficient engine and a much cheaper car.
BMW is now all about smaller engines, more power and less fuel. And i love that way of thinking! |

I think that Q7 v12 Tdi is a total fail... Too expensive, not so good fuel consumption and very very heavy....
I like the way how BMW makes such a large spectrum of power from its 3L diesel engines... And this kind of thinking is very apreciated by the customers, at least in Europe: u'll see much more 35d models than 4.0Tdi + 420CDI (taken together)... And now, when they released the new "40d" engine the sales will grow for sure... |

triple the fun
There is talk of this X5 "45d" xDrive in this month's Roundel. ~350 hp triturbo direct injection 3.0 L I6 Diesel. Will be shown at Frankfurt in 2011. I would love to buy this truck if it comes here.

BMW needs to get more of their diesel engines certified for U.S. use, dammit. I'd love to get an X6d.

Its a no for me at the moment. Loving the high torque of my 40d (especially in sports mode) at the moment.
No change or upgrade for me for at least another 3 years. |
