I could've been dead today ...

Hello - we were traveling today (I, 2 toddlers and wife) on the highway at around 75 when I wanted to pass the slower car infront, upshifted to 5th and all of a sudden the rear of the car started to sound like metal plates cringing together .. my first thought was the front drive shaft popped.. I immediately pulled over the shoulder, checked for fluid leaks etc but nothing was evident .. started driving again and the noise kept becoming louder, decided to stay on the shoulder and drove about 5 mph to home (1 mile away) .. came home and jacked up the car, but before I could crawl under this is what I found ... I dont understand how this could happen ???

The rear driver side Rim had 2 bolts missing, one hanging on the last thread probably about to fall and 2 broken, the drum twisted, I unbolted the 2 on there to remove the wheel and now I dont understand how those 2 even came out ? check out the pics .. Cassidy changed my tires 2 weeks ago and they left the bolts loose on this rim ... huge disaster averted today, very grateful to God almighty to be alive & unhurt

Had a similar situation happen after I picked up my vehicle up from a shop. Luckily, I too caught it in time to avert the impending doom. That shop got a verbal lashing from me later that day.

Cassidy tire got the truck towed to their shop I'm not comfortable them doing the work but they said to take a look at it and its at my discretion if I want the dealer to do it .. question is should both rear brake drum/ rotor assembly be replaced or just damaged one, I thought both had to be equal rotor width etc but I could be wrong

Just for reference the lugs are M14x125 and should be torqued to 100 ft lbs

Glad everyone is OK, cars are much easier to fix than people.

This is why whenever work is done that requires removal of the wheels i ALWAYS bring a torque wrench when i pick up the car (or just ask to borrow one from the shop) and do a final check of the lug nuts before driving off. I have seen stuff like this happen too many times.

There was one time I had a rattling noise coming from my right wheel, brought it to the dealer and I remember it saying "corrected bolts to 75 ft lb."

Its actually 103 lbs/ft they confirmed with the dealership and were very careful this time, also dropped car back home with an apology card etc ...

This number is accurate (103 lbs/ft) for both MINI and BMW

Yes good advice. The 18 y.o. with the air wrench set to 30 or 150 lb-ft - you never know - doesn't give a crap.

Years ago I was driving in the mountains here in an Eagle Talon after a tire rotation earlier in the week. Kept hearing and then feeling wierd stuff but didn't see anything at first when I pulled over. Turns out ALL my wheels were loose, I didn't lose a lug nut but several were hanging on by a thread on multiple wheels, unbelievable that I didn't go over the side of a mountain. I let them know my displeasure when I got home.

Then on my M3 years later some other shop torqued my wheels on so tight that when I went to do a brake fluid flush that weekend I could not remove them! I was standing & bouncing on a breaker bar attached to the lug wrench, and they would not budge.
I drove right over to that shop and made them loosen them for me, and re-torque.

ya... these people shouldn't work on cars . playing with other's lives .. glad you guys are ok.

most tire shops just tq them like crazy with the air gun, people are lazy.
