X5M with running boards?
Yeah I know, but spouse having problem getting in and out of our '12 X5M and wondering if that can be done without ruining the looks completely? It would help protecting the side bolsters too.

Depending on the color of your vehicle I think it's a terrible idea. Here's a black one I've seen for sale with running boards and I definitely think it looks a bit off. https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/d...2070/overview/
I could see if you had a more neutral colored X5M like grey or even white, it could be less obvious.

Say good bye to the backs of your pants being clean.
It can be done with factory parts though. Can put them on in a couple hours in your driveway. Or buy her a 3series wagon. 😉 |

Do you live in a state where it snows? I couldn’t open the damn doors on my wife’s X5 due to thick ice build up on the running boards. Had to get a pitcher of warm water to melt the ice which was a pita. IMO runnng boards only get in the way and make it more difficult to get in. Only reason I keep them on is because my wife thinks they look good. Now running boards on my lifted land Cruiser with 35” make sense.

It can look OK. I would have the raw plastic parts painted to match the car body and I would have the metal plate on the topside powder coated to a black or gunmetal (whatever looks best with car color). That would make them look more sporty (and more in line with the side blades on X5M).
