Hey guys,
Got rear ended on the commute home tonight. Looks like I'll be needing a new tail gate (both parts) a new taillight & a new bumper and my parking sensors are all malfunctioning. Seeing as I was rear ended the other guy's insurance should be taking care of it. I'm wondering if anybody has ever taken their car to a BMW dealership for collision repair and what that experience was like.

That sucks! Good thing their insurance will take care of it. Most dealerships don't do their own body work and instead shop it out to a local body shop that is certified to work on BMW.

Interesting, but the entire thing is handled by the dealership? I also imagine that the repairs will be done with all original parts.

If you get the repair done at a body shop, be prepared for the accident to go onto your Carfax, which will then be used against you big time, no matter how minor, if you sell to any dealer (or anyone who pulls a Carfax). You should try to get diminished value compensation from that insurer before agreeing to anything.

You should also check if your exhaust is properly aligned. I was rear ended in a similar location, and after the repair, the exhaust tips weren't aligned. But this is an easy fix by a local exhaust shop!

I’m sorry. Even if you took the cash and found a body shop which doesn’t report to Carfax, by virtue of the insurance claim and/or police report, it will still be reported to the Secretary of State, then Carfax. That’s why it’d be good to lean on the insurance company for additional compensation.

If you dont want to go thru the dealer for whatever reason, you could always just ask the service guys who does their body work and contact them directly. Its usually cheaper but if the other guys insurance is paying, it really doesnt matter to you. Edit: If there wasnt a police report and the guy hasnt talked to his insurance yet, you may ask him to pay out of pocket. That will keep the record clean and off the carfax. That guy will be looking at $5k+ tho out of pocket. Last edited by ryansbmw; 05-03-2018 at 07:45 AM.. |

This. Find out who the dealership uses and take it directly to them. The dealership is just going to be playing middleman. Deal with the body shop directly and skip the "he said, she said" routine. CarFax is a moot point by now if you've already started the process of dealing with it through the other guys insurance.

I was rear ended a few months ago with similar damage, except my upper tailgate was not impacted. I was told by my body shop that there are no aftermarket rear bumpers for the X5M, so you will get an OEM one if they cannot repair it. I got a new OEM one. Need to look on the lower tailgate, however I think they got a new OEM piece for that as well. Did not get any pushback from the others insurance that I know of.

When I had a minor accident that damaged my rear bumper, it cost the insurance $4,000 to the BMW certified collision center. They handled everything and had a Enterprise employee come pick me up for a rental car. Id look into a certified BMW collision center if you have one nearby.
I see you are in NYC. I used BMW Freeport. Pretty much a hassle free process.dropped off the car and they had insurance claim adjusters come and write them a check. |

Problem now is I've been feeling this VERY unsettling wobble at high speed braking since the car got hit. It feels like it's all over the place when I'm braking and I'm forcing the car to stay straight. I know its not my brakes I did a pad and rotor replacement with new OEM parts in October 2017. Almost seems like something got knocked loose from the hit. Also, from what I can tell I need a new Bumper, new upper tailgate (the dent is on a body line and looks cracked but I could be wrong), New lower tailgate, New pass side tail light for the door and my PDC is acting up so probably need a new sensor or two. I imagine this is going to be a bit more than $4k probably somewhere in the $7K-$10K range If its only cosmetic. |

You have the right to new OEM parts. However, if the costs exceed the value of the car, they may total it. Have the SA sit in the car with you and go on a test drive and have him experience the wobble so he can let the insurance claims adjuster know and see if they agree it was from the accident.
