NOOB 2012 XM Questions

Just got this truck and love it. I've had several Jeep SRT8's and a couple of LS3 corvettes, all Cammed and full exhaust sytems.

This thing is a beast, I would say it would keep up with my Vettes and will blow the doors off a stock SRT8.

It is rock solid and has Dinan Exhaust system. Sounds amazing. All though wife thinks it is too loud.

Just had it to the dealership for the air bag recall. Dealership statedt he following
-Coolant lines going to turbos are clogged?
-Oil leak unknown. I did not have time to ask a lot of questions.

I've read that sometimes the oil pan can leak or the gasket for the filter.
Anyone has these before?

Love driving it but my wife seems to think it is hers now, urghhhh. At least the other SUV is a Infiniti FX50 which is no slouch but no X5M...

If under extended warranty and covered, let them do what they want. If not under warranty, identify a local independent mechanic to check it out and handle your maintenance. Don't ever let the stealership handle repairs out of warranty.

Hmm,...I tend to #1 and #2. However, about #3, there is no shop that knows BMWs better than "BMW"! MHO!

If I were the OP,...I'd at least ask the dealer for an estimate on the repair cost.

Also, I was at a dealership in my area,...and had a walk through the shop area, and there was an X5 being worked on,...the entire engine was lowered from the bottom. I'm sure the designed called for this,...as it probably makes for faster work on the engine for serious repairs. So, it's quite possible the indy shop will have to do the same teardown,....especially if the work is to be done "right" the first time!

Also, whenever I'd taken my vehicle in for work,...my SA always give me a call regarding the price of the repair work!

Note to the OP: An "oil leak" cost less to repair than it does to repair "engine burning oil" excessively!

+1 I've been through this before. Been to the best independent mechanics and always left with parts thrown at the car, no solutions. I've blown through different mechanics and always end up back at the dealership. Yes they are more expensive, but if you build a relationship with the SA you can get 10-30% discounts on the reg

Just called the Dealership and she is still under certified pre-owned warranty till 100K. Yea Ha!!!!!

Everything should be covered, I would think. Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) should be the same as a regular warranty.

So Happy!!!!

Wrong. There are many instances on this forum where CPO claims were not covered the way original warranty claims were. You'd better verify coverage in advance with an SA to be sure.

Not just yet. Just find out in advance so you're not blindsided when told to pay out of pocket. That's why I strongly advocate for independent mechanics outside of warranty. Many times they are former BMW mechanics themselves, so the only difference is hourly rate (and, more honesty, in my experience). You can usually find decent feedback about these places, such as Yelp (check the Not Recommended reviews, too), to allay concerns.

The CPO warranty is most definitely not as comprehensive as the original 4 year/50K mile warranty. There's numerous exclusions - I've already had 2 repairs on my CPO'd X5 denied.

I'm a dealer advocate myself. Most of the indy shops in my area are closed weekends, no service loaners, don't always have the necessary parts on hand, etc. If the dealer messes up they have BMW's backing, whereas the small indy shop is just that, a small-time operation.

I could see bringing an E36/E46 type BMW to an indy shop, but not a late model X5M. Just my .02.

There is no question that a respected local BMW indie mechanic will be 3390873 times better than any BMW dealership... and I'm still overstating the value of a BMW dealership. While in warranty? Have at it dealership. They'll throw new parts at the problem until something eventually sticks all on their dime. Out of warranty? No thank you. Find a shop that knows BMWs, knows their quirks and nuances and go to them.

A little over 2 years into ownership and I have over $15k in repair costs (thank GOD for aftermarket warranty). I'm on a first name bases with the lot guys and the loaner desk girls.

You can have good and bad experiences with indy shops and BMW dealers, No one is going to have exactly the same kind of experience that another person may have.

You can also call BMW directly, and talk to a 'genius' about what is covered under warranty, and what exactly specific warranties may cover. I did it for mine, still has a fuel injector, front driveshaft and FRM(maybe?) module under 7yr/120k warranty

Sir, you are very right,...there is no questioning your belief regarding this matter.

For the record. I was my first level go-to technician for my first 4 BMWs ('79 320i, '84 533i,...'88 535is, and '93 325i),..jsut as many here most likely for their BMWs. I performed all maintenance bumper-to-bumper and no matter the issue. A lot of my maintenance and repairs were done at the Auto Hobby Shop on base,...me and my Haynes repair manuals and a fellow Marine to hand me a tool every now and then.

That said, when I take my vehicle in for service due to an issue,...I always present the SA with a diagnosis of what the vehicle is doing (or isn't doing) and what I think the issue could be. I do this so the dealer doesn't think they have a "don't know anything about cars/blind owner" with an open wallet! Every service/repair work I've had done was 100% based on my self-diagnostic and the dealer's work was directly in line with what was wrong and my vehicle was fixed correctly each time.

That said, it goes without saying that one is better off knowing something about vehicle other than checking the oil, gas and tire pressure. Just say'n.

Oil lines to the turbos are leaking, not under warranty either I was just told. BMW said it would take 8 hours each line. Urghh. This is my first and last BMW.

I couldn't agree with what Matt stated, hence why they're called STEALERship for a reason. INDY shops have impressed me more and more versus what the stealership has displayed
