And the funny thing is it doesn't happen all the time. Don't know what conditions causes it. But who really revs the car up after idling? I only do it to check to see it will smoke or not

Otherwise day to day driving, even in stop and go traffic I don't get any smoke. And I check for oil level constantly via the iDrive and it's always showing MAX.

Oh, another thing that you guys should look for is the valley pan. If your coolant is draining constantly at a high rate, it may be the valley pan. The valley pan seal is a known problem on M62 and N62 motors. In fact, I am working on replacing mines right now.

Since I am down there in the engine, I might as well replace the valve stem seals too. I might do an updated write up on that with photos for you DIYers.

It seems as though BMW used really poor quality seals and gaskets in the early 2000's to 2010.

It can be the valley pan but most likely it's the water tube underneath it. The o-ring that connects to the back of the water pump dries out and fails. Luckily AGA also has a great replacement for it as well.

Most likely N62 common prob valve guide seals, did my coolant pipe leaks, while you replacing the coolant seals may as well also replace thermostat, water pump, valve gaskets, all spark plugs.. did mine all @76000 miles

You definitely have a vale stem seal problem. You can find a good indy to do it for $3500 or less, but you are going to have to search around for a while
I have also been told that if you dont fix it, you will eventually not pass smog, and will ruin the cats and that is another expensive fix.

I think CA is the only state with SMOG test? I could be completely wrong.

In NJ/NJ they do visual check of the cats that they are in place and as long as OBD2 is clear of any codes you pass!

Just trade this truck for a ML63 AMG. No more seal valve issue.
Thank you to you all !!

hello,

It was replaced for free since the parts were covered by the manufacture for 10 years or 120,000 miles. I suggest you call bmw na and give them your vin # and ask what parts in your vehicle is covered for 10 years or 120,000 miles and they can check and tell you over the phone. my injectors and ccv were covered for 10 years or 120,000 miles.

smoke

hi Gang ,

i have a 2008 x5 4.8is e70 milage 134km

i been noticing some smoke ( a little more than expected) after idling .

my oil consumption for the car is normal

my coolant is normal

no lost of power

i only real see this from idling for more than 5min ( at a starbucks line up )

no smoke from it waiting for a light .

i been seeing all these valve replacement costs ( which are a little crazy )

just curious is there a cleaner additive i can use before i go down that road ( valve replacement)

cheers

Unfortunately, it's the commun issue with the 4.8i of all (2007-2010). The V8 of all E70 (2007-2013) are not reliable and always have issue.

You can try a valve seal "repair", but it will not repair, it will maybe stop to smoke a lil bit, you will need to add the additive each replacement engine oil..... but the issue of valve steal will be always present.

So you have 2 options, sale the car, or repair the valve seal $$$$$$$$$$$$

Before jumping down the valve seal wormhole, check that your ccv system is functioning properly. Also check that you don't have any vacuum leaks causing your motor to suck oil.
Last but not least, check your spark plugs, if they all look pretty much the same, its probably not valve seals; if some look oily or heavily carboned but not others, its your valve seals.
