Thoughts on aftermarket warranties
Very close to buying a 35i.
I would like some sense of security and considering an extended warranty and have heard some horror stories. I know the 35i seems to be the most reliable - what are your thoughts and who have you used? Curious about your cost/coverage? |

If < 75k miles on an N55, just bank the money. Aftermarket warranty companies have it figured out, so they’re a waste of money.

I have the CNA exclusionary warranty on my X5. Only used it once so far, most of the repairs were covered.
So far I've gotten half my $ back, and it's still good for another 18 months. |

Where did you purchase this warranty? Will they cover older X5 and X5M with mileage above 60K? I am the same boat, shopping for 2014 X5 50i or 2013 X5M and want to make sure I get some warranty coverage. |

My X5 had 55K miles or so when I purchased the warranty. Not sure where their cutoff is? I was given several different price options based on my projected mileage/# of years of coverage I wanted/deductible. |

I've owned 2x E70's and both have had thousands to tens of thousands in repairs. I have a spreadsheet on the 08 if interested.
There are a lot of things that commonly go wrong on the cars. My 1st X5 (2008 4.8i), I purchased used October 2016. It was a CPO car that just expired 1 month before I purchased the car. Dealer maintained. in 5 months of ownership it racked up 8K in repairs and maintenance. Still needed many more 1000s so I dumped it (bad valve stem seals, bad power hatch struts, sunroof stopped venting, leaking front diff). All common problems. Purchase my 2nd X5, a 2011 X5M 40K miles 1 owner car, dealer maintained. This time I purchased an extended warranty for 3200 exclusionary. Worth its weight in gold, 14K in covered repairs and counting. Yes, the 35i is the most reliable, but not everything that breaks is engine related. Having owned 2 E70s both being money pits, I wouldn't give it a second thought with a v8 on getting an extended warranty. My 2011 335D and 2013 Mini do not have extended warranties. The mini has needed about $150 in repairs (new thermostat I installed), the 2011 D has needed 3K in repairs. (plus mods to delete emissions which constantly break on the diesels. For me it would have been cheaper to lease new cars. There is no such thing as a cheap BMW :-) Just know that going in and you'll enjoy the car. Its why 80K e70s sell for under 15k now. Oil leaks, and plastic engine bay parts. |
