Hi all, I am looking for an SUV for my wife as a family vehicle (we have twin 1yr old girls).
I found a 2007 X5 4.8i AWD with 82,000 miles. The seller is willing to let it go for $9,000. Bluebook says excellent condition is worth $7,700. What do you think its worth? Is it a reliable vehicle? Should I buy it or look for something else? |

KBB is arbitrary. If there are current service records indicating consistent service history, it could be a decent deal. Consider bringing it to a local independent mechanic for a prepurchase inspection. Spending a couple hundred dollars now could save you a lot of money later.

Get it checked out with a BMW certified mechanic. If everything is good then offer to buy for 8k.
If full up to date service records are provided then give him 9k. |

Even if it has been properly maintained things still pop up and go wrong. It's the highest maintenance car I have ever owned, and I'm coming from an AMG lol!
I bought mine few months ago and had it inspected. It was fully maintained with BMW dealer receipts and a lot of the major E70 issues already addressed. I had an Indy give it the all clear but he did caution there are things that will go wrong that are common to all. And I did my research so I knew that already. I just factored a bit of that into the purchase price. Worst case was I willing to spend $6K on valve seals? The PO dropped the price $4K so I was ok with that. After looking for an SUV I felt that bang for you buck the E70 are great as long as you are aware you will be spending money on maintenance. That being said I've only had it 2 months and already some small issues have popped up. Again, just be sure you are ok with spending more on maintenance. Are there more reliable SUVs? For sure. But it's about the driving experience for me and the E70 is ahead of a lot of others in that respect. |

Thanks for the insight, I like it for nostalgic reasons. The used car market is so high right now, luckily I am in no rush to buy anything. I have my work vehicle and my weekend toy that currently do the job. I might pass on it for a newer suv, looking at a 2017 X1 now.

My advice having owned an 08 X5 4.8i fully loaded, adaptive drive, multi contour seats, 4-zone etc. Its an old car and its going to need some repairs. fully expect even if it has a good service history and you get a pre-purchase inspection that its going to need some repairs. I thought mine would be good just 3 months off of CPO warranty. You at about the milage when the valve steam seals go, so check that PLEASE! Standard test is to fully warm up the engine, let it idle for at least 5 minutes, have a friend watch, while you floor it in park. Look for smoke out the exhaust. If you see any, know you'll need new valve steam seals Front tension bushings will need replacement, probably engine partition if it hasn't been done, e-brakes tend to go around this time, along with the dreaded coolant pipe, alternator, and etc. I would not be surprised if you spend 4-6K even if you diy in the 1st year of ownership on this car. Even on a well maintained example. I did in less than 6 months, all diy repairs in my driveway. After spending months donating my weekends to wrenching I gave up on the car and dumped it for a newer lower milage X5M under warranty. I have a spreadsheet with all the repairs, and money I spent. My advice, if you love the car buy it! But don't go into it thinking that you'll only be out the purchase price, you will need some significant money to maintain it. |

There is no other SUV that drives like e70 V8 It literally drives a super sports car , handling and acceleration is like a Porsche 911. If you love driving, then buy this X5 . It is very very low mileage for its age. Be prepared to put in another 10k in it, so making it a 19k super car. I did the same for my 2011 X5 50i., 2 years ago,. I bought it for 15k and put in another 6k and now it runs like a champ and outruns Porsche Cayenne on interstate at triple digit speeds ) |

If you don't mind flying to Virginia and driving the beauty back to Phoenix, AZ., then go for this car. X1 is a baby Cooper mini. Don't waste money on that toy !! It will cost you much more then this super X5 50i |

You got that right. I was surprised to see some E70's and some E90's retain or go up in street value. E39's??.. forget about that lol

It’s wired times that used cars have been appreciating as of late. I do a net worth spreadsheet and all of our fleet has gone up in value recently. We have a Mini Cooper S, 550i and X5M and the kbb trade in value on all of them went up at least 1k in the last 3 months. The F450 is a commercial vehicle which is an entirely different animal. There is no kbb for commercial. Just auctions.

If VSS haven't been replaced, don't even consider it. Do not rush into buying an E70 until you do your due diligence on different trim levels. If you want to buy a cheaper E70 then have some cashflow on the side for immediate needs.

I checked out the car today, all checks out. I just can't fully convince myself to pay $8,900 (keeping in mind what others have previously said in this post). Soooo, I plan to wait around for other opportunities.
I really appreciate all the responses, thank you! |

I think if you have cold feet you should wait.
But what sold me on my 1st X5 4.8i was the sound of that engine. When the salesmen did a cold start I thought damn this thing sounds awesome. Then I went for the test drive and thought you know this thing rocks. This will play at your emotional side. If money is your biggest concern skip an X5 and SUV all together, they are not sound finical choices. However, if life was only about sound finical choices and not wants, we'd all be driving 10 year old corolla's. |

Don't think of having a beautiful hot mistress if you cannot afford her maintenance. That is what a E70 V8 is . It is best high powered sports car ever available on the road short of a Ferrari. |
