Truck Stopped, Won’t Start
2012 X5, 98K
New battery, new throttle body done by BMW 2-weeks ago. This week, had my indi fix leaky oil pan (Replaced gasket and oil change) and replaced bad water pump. Drove truck several miles after picking up from shop, then truck just shuts off. Was able to restart by pressing "start button," then drove another ~3 miles on my way back to shop, truck shuts off and would not start. Not even a crank - just a “click-clunk” when start button is pressed. What could be the problem? No dash lights indicating any problem, and no codes as far as I know. Sounds like it may have seized but hopefully it's something else. What engine? Some engines are notorious for losing their oil pump prime if there is work done to the oil filter gasket/housing assembly.

it can be a lot of different things but it ll be the best to take it back to that shop that car could get away 3 miles without a problem afterwards..

UPDATE: Motor Seized
Mr. Redneck, you might have called this one correctly - conclusion is that the motor broke. We are looking at a replacement. We won't know yet what happened until a teardown is done. Initial inspection does not show oil starvation. No metallics in system, so it's a mystery until the motor is pulled out and inspected. I'm disappointed but

The shop is not charging me anything.....yet. They actually paid for towing back to them. The owner said to me that I brought them a functioning vehicle, the vehicle broke after I left their shop, and that it's their responsibility until they can find otherwise. That's just one reason I use this shop for post warranty work. They do only BMW and Benz and I have used them for maybe 3-4 years on both brands, absolutely no issues.

To add to Sophisticated Redneck comments...
Copied from Youtube comments Question: I noticed some people on the internet, that had a spun rod bearing after replacing the OFHG(the belt still intact). Any logical explanation for that? Or any advice for rod bearings in general on the N55 engine? Thanks a lot. Answer: Hi, yes there is a procedure I would recommend. The current procedure to do when the oil circuit is opened is to turn the engine over by hand 2 x and then with a charger on the vehicle and the fuel system disabled (fuel pump fuse or unplug the low side pump) crank the engine for 5 sec intervals letting the starter rest for 1 min in between and do this 4x. This re-primes the system. Also you should double up on your oil changes and try to avoid short distance driving that allows water build up in the oil. I hope this helps! More info: This should be performed on any repair that interrupts the oil circuit. That would include vehicles that have sat for a long time, vanos unit and solenoid replacement, oil pan removal, or any major engine internal work. |

UPDATE - It Did Seize
Motor is out and replacement motor is waiting to be put in. Today I stopped by the shop and they have the bottom of the motor taken apart. There is clear "charring" at the bottom of connecting rod #4. #2 also has similar - the rods managed to grind on a plastic piece/cover under them (see pic). There's evidence of oil starvation. However, the oil pump looks good - no evidence it started there. Tech says he won't know the source until more investigation - he is going to take apart the entire motor, if that's what it takes. Oh, they bought the truck from me

So inline six with failed rod bearings. The more I read about inline 6 failures, and valve stem seals it makes me question the wisdom that the gas 6 is “bullet proof” Compared to the v8s
Any idea on what is considered a long tome for a vehicle to sit? I’m guessing somewhere over 30 days? Most cars are designed to not run their battery down after 30 days so you can park it at the airport for a trip and come back and it will still start. |

UPDATE
I got a class action letter settlement last week which seems to explain the issue I experienced. The lawsuit alleges that the electric coolant pumps in vehicles in the class (which include mine) are defective and could lead to sudden engine failure! The settlement (up to $1,000.00) is yet to be approved, but I'm curious if others received a similar note.
