Wow, this is a topic that just won't die.

Straight from the BMW service manual.

Use only BMW High Performance SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Oil (BMW part number
07 51 0 017 866).

10W60 on S63 is too thick.
5W30 or 5W40 are recommended for S63

I use Lubro Moly 5W40 http://www.liqui-moly.de/liquimoly/p...l?Opendocument

I will be using Mobile 1 0-40. The additives in it are almost identical to the 10-60. And S63 doesn't need 10-60

Bump.

Today I did an Oil change on my X5M and I do 5000km oil changes. The first time I did an oil change I used 5W30 Twin power but today I used 10W60 by mistake. The reason being, I’m so used to always buying 10W60, I didn’t realize until half way through that I was putting in the wrong weight oil. So silly of me.

I guess I’ll just change it out after another 5k as the weather is always hot here and that shouldn’t effect the engine much with this weight oil. We are right now at 60-80f but usually it’s around 100-125f here.

I’ll be using 5W30 Twin Power or Motul after this.

How's this for confusing? Per NewTIS:

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...supply/1PSryV8

Only the short lived S62 requires the 10W60. The S63s use either 5w30 LL-01 or LL-04 IF they don't have the petrol particulate filter and LL-12 if they do have the petrol particulate filter. LL-12 is 0W30. Dear god...

It says in your manual... here in Canada it’s 5W30....LL01 rated... although I have switched to LL04.... Its what the dealers put in here...and all my vehicle has ever seen. It doesn't burn a drop in between oil changes (10000km intervals). I can understand different oil in hotter climates...

Even in hot climate here it's 5w30 from the dealership.

No need 10w-60. Castrol edge 5w-30 for warm and 0w-40 for cold weather.

Here is a video of a winter oil change I did.

with links to oil used.

Difference?

Can anyone tell me the difference between these two oils? One is almost double the cost of the other and while I'd lean toward the more expensive one, the assumption being that more expensive means better, I'd prefer that not to be my only reason, lol. The only difference I can see is the A3/B4 designation of the more expensive oil, but not sure what that means for our X5Ms.

The one on the left has the correct 'High Strength High Shear" properties necessary, the one on the right ..such as what you would find in Costco does not....ACEA A3/B3 is what you need to look for or BMW LL01 although I now use:

Total Quartz INEO MC3 5w30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil.

APPLICATIONS
TOTAL QUARTZ INEO MC3 5W-30 is synthetic Low SAPS engine oil specially formulated to meet the technical requirements of vehicles manufactured by BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Hyundai-Kia.

TOTAL QUARTZ INEO MC3 5W-30 complies with the latest ACEA and API international standards and meets the requirements of the most demanding automobile manufacturers.

This 5W-30 grade lubricant is suitable for the most severe conditions of use (sports driving, repeated start-ups, city and motorway driving).

Its special formulation resists the most extreme variations in operating temperature.”

Thanks, Bilbo. Is there a material difference between A3/B4 and A3/B3? I'm having trouble locating A3/B3.

My mistake...A3/B4....Apparently I can’t babysit and type holding one of two 7 month olds......You can also look at ACEA C3 /LL04...which in simple terms run cleaner...Go to germanparts.ca... you will find it a good source of info for suitable oils and other fluids.

Clevemont...Here is some info from an old post I did previously that may help further...”I do the oil changes on my vehicles not covered by BMW under their free In warranty maintenance program.

Here in 🇨🇦, I was using LL 01 rated oil....but switched to LL 04.... Currently I use 5W30 year round (no change from dealer/manual). Currently using it in the E71 X6M.... and will switch our other vehicles once BMW quit the free servicing.

With time on my hands I researched the switch to LL04...specifically ACEA C3 / A3/B4 Low SAPS rated oil....

I also only used Top Tier ⛽️.

Wondering if anyone else is using LL 04...and in addition if “anyone” not just in a colder climate uses 0W30/40...either year round or through the winter months...

Below is the best info/link I have found to sum things up that is current. As much info is dated...or plain wrong. But the whole premise here is that our gas in North America is really in fact a lot closer to European specs since 2014....

“LL-04 (2005). API SN. ACEA C3 (similar to A3). SAE 5W30, 5W40. The LL-04 oils have been greatly misunderstood in the past but this is now in greater demand. Most LL-04 oils are intended for Diesels, although it was also approved for gas engines in Europe and other world markets. BMW never certified LL-04 for the US (see below). Diesel oil has long been valued by engine builders and tuners because of its higher levels of ZDDP and higher HTHS ratings, both are excellent indicators of engine protection at higher temperatures. LL-04 also has a lower SAPS value which is good news for direct-injection engines (all BMW turbo engines since 2007).

As part of the efforts to make engine oil more environmentally friendly, the US EPA required ZDDP levels to be reduced in gasoline oil. However, Diesel oil was exempt from ZDDP reduction. BMW never certified LL-04 for the US market because a) there weren't many Diesels for sale here, b) it was incompatible with the high amounts of sulfur and Ethanol in US fuel. However, since 2014 our gasoline more closely matches European formulas and interest in LL-04 has increased. LL-04 and LL-01 are interchangeable/compatible but LL-04 is preferred for its higher ZDDP and low SAPS.”

Oil

It's 5w30. I purchased some recently from BMW parts for my vehicle based on VIN. I have a 2011 BMW X5M and the oil clearly says 5w30. It's in a blue BMW canister.

Engine builders like Troyjeup are using 5w50 redline on the buolt S63's. I wonder if that is better for our stock engines. I am still doing 5000km OCI's using BMW twin power 5W30.

5000km changes...crikey...

I'm thinking of going to 12K...which many would deem excessive in itself. I don't track the vehicle, I do drive spiritedly....and don't burn oil....For that matter neither does our F25 X3 28i....still on dealer 10K changes....

I'm just not used to my BMWs not burning oil...
