Looking to Purchase an X5M

Good day all and great forum.

I have been searching to replace my current Ford Expy with another SUV/Truck and have been on the fence with a few brand new vehicles. So far i priced a 2016 Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot and Kia Sorento. All top of the line models with the bells and whistles. At the end of the day they come out to about $50K.

I am turning 39 this year and having mixed emotions about getting an X5M. I drool over the looks and sheer specs of the motor but everything I am finding should be out of warranty and down the road may have some of the S3/N3 (not sure which one is on the X5M's) engine issues I have been reading about.

So to cut to the chase I am wondering if $40K is a good price for a 2011-2013 (not sure what the big difference is between the years) X5M with about 54-60K miles (i left some links at the end of this post). What would you look for if this price seems to good to be true?

Thanks again to all of you who continually contribute to make this a great forum for guys like me who is looking into the BMW world!

Get an aftermarket warranty!!!

At least you know ahead of time what your repair costs will be. I'm not saying these cars aren't reliable, just saying when something breaks it can be very expensive.

thanks. This forum is actually the first time I have heard of after market warranties. Any suggestions as far as companies to check out? Does that apply for 2nd owners?

I want to let you know that the x5m drinks major gas. it also gets expensive for repairs.....and yes you will need repairs. warranty aint cheap neither.

you do get a nice looking fast truck but it comes with a price.

im in Toronto ill sell you my 2010 x5m for 37k USD . lots of stuff taken care off and mods included.

Well I own a few vehicles and I can tell you this... In my garage, there is a 2013 LX570 (26kmiles) , a 2010 X5M (61k miles) and a 2014 Explorer (90k miles). I like each of them for very different reasons. The Lexus really is a tank and is great for hauling people and gear, drives like a soft tank, and is really not engaging in any way to drive.

The explorer is what I use for my daily vehicle, and I beat this thing to no end. I drive it hard and on every kind of terrain you can imagine. I have never had a single problem and maintenance has been cheap and a breeze. I am guessing I've spent around $500 in 90k miles. Do I love to drive it? Not at all. The stereo sucks, the interior is cheap, and yet it performs very well as a workhorse.

The X5M is the one vehicle that puts a smile on my face. It's expensive to drive, somewhat needy, lots of maintenance attention, and yet I have never enjoyed the drive of a vehicle more. The quality of materials is top notch, and it drives like a wild animal.

If you want an amazing ride, and are willing to budget for upkeep, you will love the M.

The other cars you mention are practical but not going to provide the fun factor. If you can afford as aspects of the X5M, go for it.

Just with eyes wide open...

Off topic, but I had an LX570 before I got my X5M. That car is a tank (in a good way). I had mine fitted with 33" mud tires (the dealer thought I was insane when I asked them to take off the stock tires and add these).

If you ever need a car that can go through anything, while keeping 8 people comfortable in luxury, the LX is for you. I describe it as a car built for third world countries to be driven by people with first world problems.

Having said that, I am very happy with my switch to the X5M. The gas mileage really isn't that bad. ~14 MPG combined.

Extended warranties can be purchased from the dealership if the car is still covered by the factory warranty. Call around to different dealerships and try to get the best price. It doesn't matter where you buy the extended warranty from. I'd budget about $3,500 for a warranty, either factory or aftermarket.

thats kinda where I think my findings are deterring me. Most of them should be past the original warranty point so I would be without the option to extend. Would I still be able to get an aftermarket warranty if the original is expired?

Oh and I would be happy with 14 mpg. I have a 2000 Ford Expedition. I get about 9 mpg!

The first second and third links have been posted for over 3 months (when I bought mine). I did some research on 21 century and it was a lot of negative stuff.
