X5M Rear Brake DIY Help

New to the forum and looking for a DIY tutorial for the rear brake pad and rotors. Searched but not finding anything specific to the M...

Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Specifically with torque specs, wear sensor routing, any other tips/ tricks.

Thank you!!!

Argh...if I had time I’d make one. The calipers in the rear are normal floating calipers that you’d find on your average car. Make sure the brake is disengaged first. Pop off the bushing caps in the back, It’s an Allen key, I think 6mm to unbolt the caliper rods inside the bushings then push and pull on the caliper until it compresses the piston a bit then pull the caliper off and hang it from something in the suspension to prevent it hanging from brake line. I think it’s an e14 to remove the caliper bracket (I use a craftsman 14mm multitooth socket that works with anything). After that comes off then use an Allen key to unbolt the rotor and swap it out. Put the bracket back on, compress the piston with c clamp. Put in new pads (I use anti squeal stuff on the back of the pad you can use grease or the stuff that forms a gasket, and then lube the rails with grease and inside the bushings also ensuring no grease gets on the pad face or rotor). Then throw the calipers back on, bleed the brakes, and you’re good to go. The wear sensor is in the passenger side in the rear...just pay attention to how you take it off, kind of a pain to get to the junction since it’s tucked behind some plastic...clean everything off before you take it apart.

Awesome! Thanks for the detailed response! Do I need to fully disengage the electronic parking brake via Carly app?

Anybody happen to know where I can find some torque specs??

Bump. Just looking for clarity on releasing the parking brake. Is it necessary to do so with coding app?

Thanks!

I didn’t have to code anything when doing the wife’s e70 3.0si but I have changed rotors on my X5M yet

Also unsure about the torque specs for everything...I try and do it by feel most of the time if I don’t know the exact specs

Hey there,
Be Aware !! I am not sure if this applies to the M but on the e70 there are THREE diff types of rear brake caliper setups.
You don't mention the model year of your M. I have a Feb 2012 build e70. When I changed my rear pads out, I knew of TWO kinds of calipers, the difference being in how the parking brake works. There is an old style, I think with cable actuated parking brake, and a new style with little motors on the calipers for the e-brake. These call for a bit more procedure to adjust those to loosen before putting new pads in.
I was expecting the new style on mine before I did the work.
But when I opened mine up and got to the calipers, they did not look like either variety. I had a electronic parking brake actuator unit under the car by the axle, which had cables that then ran to each caliper, used to actuate the e-brake. I think mine was actually easier to do than I expected due to this.

So you may want to do a little digging or find some Youtube videos. Sorry I can't explain it in more technical detail... I didn't see anything helpful on the "intermediate" style brakes that I seem to have.

Resurrecting this guy as it's a top hit for google "how to replace E70 X5M rear brakes".
I just replaced my rear pads and have some heads up for the next folks who dive in:

1. You need a 7mm hex socket or Allen Wrench for the caliper pins/bolts. This is non-standard and I didn't have one in any of my sets. My local hardware store did't have one either and it was just a bit too late to hit the auto parts store...

2. My T45 socket worked in a pinch as a substitute for the 7mm hex. Surprisingly well.

3. Running the new sensor took quite a bit of time and it's pretty tough to reach the male/female connection that's hidden above the heatshield/inner fender. That connector lives in a little black plastic square housing along side another sensor and is hinged on one side. Use a long slender flat head screwdriver to release the 2 snaps on the outboard side of the box.

The brake job itself was standard, generic, floating caliper brake job. Just those few hickups added some hours and frustration. But amazon just delivered my shiny new 7mm hex so I'm ready for next time...
