This headlight conversion has had more twists and turns than a bad horror flick!
Do I have option SA524? Yes, I do! ...then it was No ...now it is yes again! (its in the VO!) I'm sure that I have to buy a new FRM3 because mine is out of the date range suggested by the retrofit guide, so I bought new FRM directly from BMW ($345), installed wiring leads according to wiring instructions, tied the unused wires back, Installed FRM and sent my truck to be coded with Autologic. This system kept defaulting and didn't recognize or wasn't able to code the FRM... Indy tech advised me to take it to the dealer. Dealer tech discovered that my new FRM3 was from a bad batch... from a service bulletin (issued last week) identifying serial model ranges. Luckily, he was able to get a new/good one under warranty since I had a receipt from BMW. He also discovered that there has been an update to the retrofit kit dated 06/13. The new update apparently does not require an FRM3 change for models built after 10/09 as long as it has SA 2VA (Yay! mine has this). The new wiring harness has 5 wiring leads at the headlight connector vs. 4 (I also have the updated wiring harness). Since I can use my original FRM3, we reinstalled it back into my truck and put the newest/latest/greatest FRM3 (unused) back in the box. The wiring has been double checked and the additional leads have now been routed/installed in the correct pin locations (for vehicles WITH SA524) I should be good, right? Not so fast... BMW NA says that this retrofit is for a european only vehicle, so BMW won't allow the tech to code it.... WTF!?! Right now, I'm like The BMW tech suggested that I take it back to Indy shop with autologic to see if they could code it, so tomorrow, I will retrieve my truck from BMW and send it back to the Indy shop to attempt to code it once again with Autologic. (at least my FRM is good and I am confident that the wiring has been done correctly) |

What a journey this headlight retrofit is turning out to be! Definitely worth it through - I hear the LED headlights are awesome, and getting rid of those halogen coronas will give a much more current look. Heck even the headlight units when the vehicle is off look more current.
Good luck with that re-coding, hope it works out! |

Nice! You have the part number for the new harness? What about a pdf of the new instructions?

Looks amazing! Would be great if you could do a comparison picture with the lights with you and your buddies X5 on there different modes; rings, low beam, high beam.
Thanks for the information! Can confirm my FRM3 has the orange sticker Just finished plumbing in my harness took me just under 2 hours. Gotta sort that lens on the headlight you sent me then I can fit the headlights and complete the connections. Can't wait! |

New LED Headlights installed, coded and working 100%,
Newly refinished bumper to eliminate front plate holes for a clean, unobstructed front fascia: New downpipes installed yesterday. New carbon diffuser today: I suppose I have adopted the mantra of doing "a mod a day" instead of "a mod a month" lately... lol! I am hoping that the Dimisa tips will be installed tomorrow. |

Lets see..
$1800 for brand new headlights $345 for new FRM $100 for harness. $600 for trial and error at three differnt shops to attempt to figure out FRM and coding. (This was before discovery of bad FRM and confusion about revised wiring) So at the moment $2845 + my time invested? Still better than than the $4000 ebay retrofit kit. You can certainly find cheaper LED headlights, but I wanted them to be perfect. Worth it IMO. I'm hoping to offset the cost by selling off my old headlights and FRM. |

Totally worth it IMO... refreshes the front end to the latest BMW current model headlight technology. BMW also updated the entire vehicle, so I now have the latest firmware and updates to all of the modules in the vehicle. I am extremely pleased with the new look and utility of the LEDs. 3.5" Dimisa tips added along with new Carbon Diffuser Last edited by gixxerboy63; 08-18-2015 at 04:19 PM.. |
