Howling noise coming from engine on idle

Recently, my car has been making a strange howling/whining noise from the rear driver's side of the engine, and I'm getting 2BDE and 2BF0 codes. It almost sounds like an intake leak, so I'm questioning if it might be that? I've had a MAP sensor code (28A0) in the past.

My broken blower fan sounds just like that. Are you sure it was off?

Just tried that, no luck. The car started giving a 2775- air mass too low code just now, though. Hopefully it's not something too major

Hmmm this is weird, I don't see at idle how such a sound could be produced even by a leaking intake system.

If you are a bit handy, you can make sure that the accordion section of the intake system is still well clamped, but other than that I can't see what it could be base on the info I have.

Maybe PCV system?

Yeah, I checked the inlet pipe and the airbox clamps and they all seem to be tight. The noise seems to be coming from the valve cover, underneath the second engine cover in the back. I'll remove it later to check.
Also, there's a faint smell of gas, leading me to believe I might have an injector leak back there? Could that be the source of my HPFP codes? The noise is definitely something on or in the rear of the valve cover, though it didn't stop when I took off the oil cap to see if it was from the PCV.

Okay, I checked the PCV valve and it's blowing out air, so that's not the issue. What else could be causing this? I've tried searching everywhere to no avail.

Is it possible for the valve cover to make a noise that doesn't go away when I remove the oil cap? I feel like that's what's causing the problem.

It's possible for the CCV membrane inside the valve cover to be ruptured and cause a howling noise. There's a repair kit out there for it, but it requires a dremel and jb weld or glue.

I tested the pcv valve, it's fine. There's no suction from the barb and the noise doesn't go away when I open the oil cap, which has plenty of suction.

No, there's no PCV issue to cause that.
Actually, I figured it out. Once I took off the rear engine cover, the noise stopped, so it has to be coming from there. I'm not too worried, as it doesn't seem to affect things. I was able to fix all the codes by cleaning the MAF and the chargepipe MAP.

Not a lot, but a normal amount I think. I didn't get any sucking from the barb, so I think what I'm seeing is normal? I didn't think a broken PCV valve meant a lot of suction.

EDIT: Just went outside and checked again, the noise doesn't change when I take off the oil cap. So I assume my pressure is normal/the noise is unrelated? I'm hoping my PCV valve isn't messed up despite my testing

I have this same noise after replacing valve cover with no pcv issues or anything. Did it really just end up being the rear engine cover??

Not really. I think it's just a normal noise these cars make, as it came and went somewhat intermittently throughout my ownership and didn't change when i replaced the valve cover 6 months after the original post. I will say that if you hear the dolphin/chipmunk noises, especially under braking, that's a better sign of PCV failure in my experience. A shop actually damaged my (replaced) valve cover during an incorrectly-performed walnut blasting and I got those noises. Fortunately FCP covered it. I sold the car last April after putting 30k miles on it. Feel free to ask me any other questions you may have.

Are you happy it's gone? I'm less than a year into my first ever bmw and I would not be surprised whatever your answer is. I love this car. I hate how it was put together lol

Honestly, I miss it a lot sometimes but I’m glad I let it go. The rust on my particular car was problematic and the synchros on a couple gears started to go. Otherwise the engine was totally healthy, a shop did damage my valve cover during an incorrectly done walnut blast so I had to replace it again. It still had the original water pump and thermostat when I sold it at 95k somehow. After I did some suspension mods (for $150 tension strut bushings are a must do) the car was a blast in a way that my 340i doesn’t really replicate. I think if I did it again, I would choose a slightly different spec, though. What don’t you like about how your car was put together? Is it xDrive?
