20" Runflats patched !
I got a nail stuck in my left rear tire, took it to BMW and they told me that they have orders from BMW headquarters not to patch the runflats and told me just to buy another tire at $510 + installation and tax. I got kinda pissed because the nail was dead center and I didn't see a reason as to why they wouldn't be able just to patch it especially since i only have 1200 miles on the tire. So I took it to Discount Tire a mile down the road and not only did they fix it but they did it for FREE!! Any one else have any problems with this???

I never bring my car to BMW for tire and alignment problem. I find that they make it worse. I always bring it to the tire specialist. Talking about nails, I only done 5000K and I had 2 nails in it. I was lucky that both did not go right through it.

Just had a Dunlop RF Patched
When I took my 20's off for the winter, I had a rim repaired due to car wash rash. When the tire was dismounted they noticed a nail. They fixed it and didn't know any differently. Of course I will be unable to test the tire till spring, but I am not anticipating any problems. I would repair it at a good tire shop and try it out.

Patching a runflat if the nail is in the tread is ok. Just not ok if the nail happens to be in the sidewall. Good to hear you didn't get ripped off by dealership.

Your dealer is not very good. I lived in Dallas and hated Classic BMW.
I got a nail in my 20" run flat about 6 months ago. Dealer said they don't repair only replace. BMW of San Diego. However, they said go to Discount Tire, which I did, and they would repair which they did. Free of charge I might add. Run flats are like any other tire, Depending on where the damage is they can be patched as long as you get it repaired quickly and do not drive on the tire for a long period of time before being repaired. Not all Discount tire stores are certified with run flat repair/replacement. So check before you go.

Bought the tire/rim insurance from the dealer. For me it was worth it. Already replaced one. Runflats are only replaced. Can't be mended.

+1 correct , despite what some say RF can be repaired as long as damage isn't near the outer edge. |

Nail in my passenger rear last night. No air leak so the dealer ordered a replacement and suggests replacing both rear tires, 13,000 miles. I will test my wheel/tire warranty. It didn't fix a bent rim, maybe it will at least replace a tire...

Yah....bring tire and alignment issue to local tire specialist. Never the dealer. RF can be patched as long as its not the sidewall that is damaged. Also remember tirerack.com for you tire needs. They are very good on prices and will ship to your local installer for installation.
As a side note. I had a broken tire valve stem one time on my e46 M3 and was really close to a dealer. They wanted me to get a new tires to fix my cracked tire stem. Go figure.... |
