Question BMW X6 Diesel Reliability Question.

Hello Everyone,

Greetings from Trinidad my name is Michael, I'm new to the forum and I just got one question for you guys. I'm about to order the xdrive 30D or 40D and my only concern is Reliability. I know Petrol engines are problematic from my previous vehicles I've owned: Audi a4 1.8t b7, Volvo s40 1.8 1998, Peugeot 307sw everyone of them had Problems Galore....Fuel Pump, Spark Plugs, Engine mounts, Tranny, etc etc... Can't count the amount of times I've shutdown in the middle of the road and the amount of monies spent on repairs could buy a brand new Audi a4. Now I had made the best decision of my life and purchase a Mitsubishi L200 2.5L Automatic Diesel pickup truck and found that after 1 year and 100,000km later not a single problem. But its not refine or Exhilarating to drive which brings me back to the european vehicles once again. The X6 is beautiful and fast from what i saw. But is it Reliable. I've done alot of research and found that the 35i and the 50i had fuel pump issues but nothing is being said about the 30d or 35d or 40d. Which Brings me back to the main question:

Are there Any Problems of any BMW X6 Diesel?

We've had no issues with the x6 35d. Have replaced a turbo on the x5, under warranty, after 50,000 kms

Thanks for the reply, so I guess i'll have to expect a turbo failure. Any idea how much that cost? in US dollars?

I dont think you need to expect a turbo failure. Its rare. I have owned a 35d engine and run it to 350,000kms. The only thing I needed to change was the HFP at 250,000. But thats quite normal I think for so many kms. I didnt even need to change the injectors, and never had any turbo problems.

Thats pretty good so I've made a good decision and purchase the X6 30d. Diesel is very very cheap so i'll be saving alot.

No, you won't expect turbo failure. Just the only issue I've had with the x5. diesel.

I own a 2009 30d with 20,000 Kms on it, no issues at all with the Diesel engine and I drive it hard every time I hit a good road, our Diesel quality in Costa Rica is poor and thats not an issue either, so you can be sure that the 30d engine will do the job.
As for the 35d and 40d engines, BMW factory will not deliver those engines to countries like mine that dont have quality diesel, mostly because the microparticulate filter gets clogged easily.
I do sell and use a Diesel aditive made in the US called DIESEL KLEEN that improves power and reduces emisions and makes the car work like a gas engines, it really help to improve a poor diesel like ours.
Hope this info will help you in your decision

Thanks Motex for the info and you are right about the 40d. Our BMW dealers don't sell both the 40d and 35d cause of poor quality diesel which is very disappointing. But I will settle for the 30d cause I took a test drive last week and it's fast enough for me. Its gonna be a Mineral Silver on 215 Y spokes.

Good luck, later you can buy a K&N filter that fits into the factory air-box which will make the turbo to breath 30% more air than the stock filter.

Ultimas, the 3.0d offers a 30% saving on fuel when compared to the 3.5d, lower power output but still a great work horse.

Thanks GJM, I suspected that but diesel prices are very cheap 0.22 cents US which is nothing to pay. Gas prices are 0.80 cents US. Yes we are spoil here in Trinidad
