Excessive soot accumulating around exhaust
I've got a 2011 X5 50i with the M performance package. I saw an earlier thread about possible leaky injectors but my dealer says this is normal. The only way to get the crap off is to use a mild buffing compound or clay bar it for a few hours. Wondered if anyone has discover more facts on where I can direct my dealer that there 'is' a problem?

Experiencing any drivability problems yet? Not as much power, longer cranking, etc. For me it was the black soot, loss of power, and longer cranks. The longer cranks was the symptom the dealership needed to replicate in order to change the injectors and plugs without any fault codes present.

This has been covered a few times on this forum. I had the issue on my M, at first dealer stated it was normal....until it left a code. They replaced all of the injectors and it has been fine since. There is a thread concerning the X5 50, try a search.

Does anyone have a pic of what the 'failed injector' soot buildup looks like.
I'm sometimes get a few carbon spots on the bumper around the tailpipes, but it seems to wipe right off.

They are black, but I remember looking at them awhile back, and the tips seem to be evenly coated...without any black on the connecting pipe. I also saw another M Sport 50i at the dealer (dark blue) and it had the same black tips..so I assumed some X5s came that way.
Looking back through the service history, it does look like 'fuel injector leaking' was something that was addressed last year.

How many injectors did they replace? Sounds like trouble.

Not sure...it happened before I bought it, and the service history I have just shows 'injectors leaking'.
If I had to describe what I'm seeing now, I would say it looks like a few carbon laden water droplets are coming out of the pipes and landing on the bumper surround.

Not exactly positive if it changed from a certain model year, but the black exhaust outlets denote the M performance pack option. I think on the 35i it was only available on '13 but on the 50i it was earlier. Anyway, even the 35i gets this and I hope it's not the same issue as the V8. Anyone hear if it impacts the 35i? |

Nope, at least not since I've had it.
Now I'm just curious if my tips are supposed to be chrome.

then you should be good. Dark accumulation on the bumper is the kiss of death.

I had the dreaded black soot, loss of power and longer cranks a few months back and the dealer said the 50i is 'supposed to run rich'. But then it gave a reduced power warning and the dealer spent 3 days trying to diagnose the problem and finally changed the injectors in the right cylinder bank. I was surprised when they told me this was the first time they had ever changed injectors on an X5
Now the symptoms are back but there's no error code and the dealer says they can't do anything. Apparently all these symptoms along with a mileage of 10 MPG is not reason enough for them to file a warranty claim.

Cleaned off bumper and this was after 50 miles. Let it go and it gets blacker and blacker.

What you just described is exactly what the dealer needs to hear from you. Make sure you give them clear enough directions so that they can replicate the 'long cranking' with a shop foreman present. Once that works strongly ask that all eight injectors and plugs be replaced citing reasons such as customer service, time, money, etc. I'm on good terms with my dealer and he was saying that the problem is common enough that they stock the parts as it is a matter of when not if. Also said that the term 'long cranking' is what is looked for if there are no fault codes present. Apparently the black soot isn't enough to get them to physically examine the injectors without the long cranking being present. As it was my car had only two bad injectors, but the foreman authorized all eight to be replaced. There is a service bulletin, but it only states that the injectors could go bad. Service Bulletin Number: SIB-13-07-12 Component: Fuel System, Gasoline Summary: On some vehicles, the high pressure fuel injector, can lead to an internal failure due to incorrect operation and would need to be repaired and/or replaced. Models f01, 02, 04, 07, 10, 12, 13, e70, 71. No model years listed. Good luck! |

Mine cranks long in below freezing temperature when it's outside over night...but if it's parked in the heated garage it fires first crank. Is that normal or likely injector issue. It's too dirty here to tell if I have soot on the bumper and I just got a tune so the power is through the roof vs stock.

I snapped a pic of what I'm seeing on mine...strangely enough I also had a check engine light for a bit the other day (it's now gone off). Car is going into the dealer on Tuesday.
This is from maybe 100 miles of driving...is this normal?

Hey Guys,
I have a 2011 X5 50i with about 21,000 miles. I was getting the same issues spoken of here. I called my SA and told him I was getting a slow start and also the black "soot" accumulation on the rear of the car. I was not however getting a check engine light. After reading this thread I called him and brought the car in and also referred him to the Service Bulletin Number: SIB-13-07-12. They called this am and said the car is done and that they replaced all of the injectors and plugs on the car. Just thought this might help someone that is getting the same problems. Otherwise, love the car. Also, it is a CPO so I don't know what it would have cost if it was under warranty. Thankful for this website. It helped me out. Glad I use it. |

Dealer Response
After taking to dealer they said I already had the injectors that are the replacements however one wasn't functioning 100% so replaced one injector and 3 spark plugs. We'll see if I continue to have a problem.
