DINAN suspension for 2011 X5M: Review

All,

I finally got my X5M back after over a week of trying to get an inspection sticker. Crazy bad luck I have with these things.

Anyways, while it was in the shop I had the Dinan suspension installed. The stance is going to take time to settle, but the initial look on the outside is significantly lower than what I was expecting. Dinan states about less than an inch. But it easily looks over an inch front and rear.

You can definitely tell there is a drop by looking at it. In comparison next to an X1. It is almost the same height. Needless to say, the drop is noticeable.

In addition to this setup you can actually adjust the rear more, which is neat. I guess Dinan released a new kit for the car and it does not include the rear set up, bushings and self leveling adjustment.

From the driver seat, the stance, angle and view down the hood is so much better than OEM. I feel like I can see more of the road in front of me. The steering although unrelated, feels so much better. The turn in and dive into a corner almost feels like I am in my M3. There is absolutely zero body roll from what I can tell at least. The X5 just feels smaller than it really is now.

Even going over bumps, dips or turning out of a shopping area onto a main road the car does not rock or bounce anymore.

Ride comfort has definitely not been sacrificed by any means and is actually a lot better in my opinion.

The backed feels more planted and solid with daily driving. Before it just felt a little floaty and bloated if that makes any sense on the highway or above 45mph.
This is all observed in the Highest M settings.

In addition to having the ESS software, for some reason the car just feels so much faster with the suspension modifications.

Also, AJ and Roman were kind enough to help when we were having a major issue with the inspection.

They stepped up to the plate like they have in the past when I was in a time of need and delivered 100% on assistance and service.

I will continue to progress once I spent some more time with it. I am very happy though. Lastly, thank you to BMW Norwell. To Tom Toppan and Brian the Dinan tech on the work they did.

They are an amazing dealer. Have done all the SC and Dinan work to my E90 M3 and now the work has begun on the X5M.

If you are in the Boston area, this is my go to dealer. Service and attention to detail is impeccable. I was going to NORWOOD for a year or so prior and got so fed up with the service quality. Steve Richard and Matt the Dinan tech are great guys and wish they were down here.

Cheers all. If considering suspensions, I highly recommend the Dinan. It was well worth the cost.

Will the Dinan suspension kit work if you have a 25 mm spacer on OEM rear wheels and 15 mm spacers on the front?

yup, I use 20 rear and 12 front when I run my 20's, and I have no issues with my 22's either so you'll be fine

Sorry guys wrong pic! However the M3 is on Dinan stage 3. Their coilover setup. Great set up, quiet, civilized, and corners like one bad mother. Flat as can be

In general, are the springs different for the X5M and the X5? I have an 10 X5 4.8 MSport with self leveling rear and I was thinking about trying the Dinan suspension even though it is designed/marketed for the X5M. Im not sure if I could use the new shock mounts but I figured I could probably use the front springs and rear links. I really like idea of a 1 inch drop and better ride quality than the H&R's.

Your best bet with those questions is to ask your Dinan dealer or call Dinan.

When reviewing the alignment specs the X5M does have quite a bit of camber which I don't know if it has any impact with your model.

It's worth a phone call.

I was told I could go a lot lower but this is specified ride height by Dinan.

Please post another pic when you get time. The back almost looks lower than the front in this pic but I'm sure it's just too dark and the angle.

Here are a few other pics.

I included some pics of my space grey theme I got going on with the black sapphire metallic paint.

Let me know what you guys think.

Rear diffuser is custom painted space grey, side moldings and turn signals. As is the X5M emblem. The surround is space grey and the emblem itself is gloss black.

Great work by IND

So that's what those 22 inch BBS wheels look like on the X5M!!!

Well done love them!

What are the sizes again and what tires you go with?

22s I think with this ya pension will fill the fenders nicely (like yours) and the ride will be even better.

The 20s just look too small now

Thanks for the kind words, I was trying to go for the older 4.8is "look" . I think these wheels pull it together nicely. There are 25mm spacers in the rear and 15mm up front. I don't remember the size of the wheels, but I know the rears have 335/25/22 and the fronts 295/30/22 Pirelli scorpion zeros. I still feel that the suspension is going to settle some more, Dinan publishes very conservative numbers, it is closer to 1in drop currently.

SouthShoreM3-
Can you explain what you mean by:
"In addition to this setup you can actually adjust the rear more, which is neat. I guess Dinan released a new kit for the car and it does not include the rear set up, bushings and self leveling adjustment."
The rear ride-height sensor rods eliminate previous parts?
Thanks
