I don't track MPG all the time but I would guess I am getting .5 more mpg based on average driving and a little spike in MPG. Then again, I might be crazy.
Hope this helps.

jzbm3,

Did you get any answers back from the dealer in regards to the build up?

Yes, I was told it was normal.

I have the same issue with my 2011 X5M. Only mods are a tune and Dinan exhaust for performance. The door is so bad that it has actually turned my garage floor black.

Check engine light came on for the half dozen times again.

Definitely injectors and the idle is so lumpy the car actually shakes!!!

Wanted to give some an update on this. Found out that I'm eating oil at a rate of 1 qt per 3000 miles so that was suspect to my problem. After pressuring the dealer to look more thoroughly they found both my turbos are leaking oils through the output which is causing the loss of oil. Luckily with 7000 miles left on the warranty I'm getting two new factory turbos.

Black Soot, Dealer replacing all 8 injectors

I have battled the black soot since purchasing my 50i pre-owned with 22,000 miles. I couldn't keep it clean and I just figured it was normal. A couple weeks ago I noticed it started up a little differently that it had been. Then, last week it shut off at a red light and decided to go ahead and schedule service. I dropped it off this morning and already got the call telling me they're replacing all 8 injectors and some oil breather hoses all under warranty.

Also getting (another) passenger seat mat under warranty. Third time the seat belt chime and light go off randomly.

Also replacing plastic trim along the top side of the tailgate that creaks when turning or on rough roads.

John Sojdei is the SA of choice at Classic in Plano, TX in my opinion. Great communication.

Awesome! Yeah, before out of warranty gotta take advantage of what they offer. BTW, after my post the dealer called back and said the piston rings are seeping and will have to break down engine and replace all seals. Little excessive but glad they took it a step further to make sure nothing else was wrong.

Actually they said piston sleeve. I'll get it back next week and I'll share the notes of what they actually replaced. So far the vehicle is up with the trans and engine on stands. Getting pretty serious. Was told if gone too much further on repairs they would have sent new motor. Kind of wish the had.

Thanks
I just ran the first tank of fuel after all 8 injectors were replaced. Before I was getting 15 max. I confirmed onboard computer with hard calculations. On this first tank I got 17.46 with hard calculation and 17.4 on the dash.

I know this isn't the point of the thread, but last weekend I was using some "bug and tar remover" on the wheel well and thought I'd give it a shot around the exhaust. With just a little applied all the soot buildup was gone. Alpine White spotless around the black exhaust tips (factory M Perf Pkg). For about a minute, then I drove and it comes back.

Anyway, not a bad solution. Easier than a clay bar as was suggested.

Going through slightly different issues since replacing all 8 injectors:

And I was sweating it driving home (another ~450 miles). Dropped at the dealer yesterday afternoon, now waiting to hear what's causing the error.

BMW Engineering is now involved as the dealer has exhausted their scripted fixes. Will be Tuesday until the next update.

Recap of my story: after all 8 injectors, plugs, connecting lines, etc. my wife and I made a trip to the Outer Banks, NC ~500 miles one way. CEL popped up while we were there and drove fine. Ran around on vacation and drove home without issue. Dropped at the dealer, they had my X5 for 6 business days diagnosing and working with engineering. I picked it up a few days ago.

Car was running rich in bank#2. Turbo inlet causing leak. Turbo inlet pipe seal and MAF replaced. Still rich. Replaced o2 sensor on bank#2.
Bank #1 then throwing rich condition, replaced o2 sensor on #1, did not fix issue.
PUMA case opened.
Replaced MAF sensor on bank #1 and ignition coil.

The awesome thing about all this is the dealer handled everything under goodwill. Just under 57K, I bought the extended maintenance since we put on 15-20K per year. Didn't do a warranty...may re-think that now.

Anyway, since getting it back, running great. Gas mileage is 1-2 better doing the around town driving. Heading to our shore house Friday afternoon, I'll see how good the gas mileage really can get!

After reading these post, I was hoping I wouldn't experience anything like this on my '11 50i M Sport...just last week I started noticing the black soot around my exhaust tips and on my garage floor...I have an appointment at the dealer next month for the recall on the drive shaft so I will have them diagnose the cause of the black soot around the exhaust tips as well. I'm currently out of warranty so hopefully I can get them to goodwill the repair service.

Recently purchased a 2011 X5 50i and have been following this forum as to what to watch out for...

I have recently noticed that my crank times in the morning (after a 12-24 hour sit) are longer....but not over 5 seconds, so, thanks to this thread I stopped worrying about it.

However, in the last week it seems like I have signifincantly reduced power in lower gears for the first few minutes of driving every morning....almost feels like really bad turbo lag I used to occasionally get with my 335i.

Does that fit with an impending injector issue? Of note, I did use a bottle of Techron fuel additive this past fill-up, so I was curious if that plays into the less than optimal running of the engine for the first few minutes.

Sorry for the " FNG questions"....just starting to get into BMWs/cars in general.

Sounds like my experience. Just had to keep on the dealer for getting deep into what could be wrong. Fixed mine and no soot and getting more power and better has mileage.

I was driving to the grocery store today and this message popped up on the screen...I hope it's nothing serious but I have a feeling the black soot from my exhaust tips was a sign of something going wrong...

Has anyone been successful in getting BMW to replace the injectors prior to the car starting to show the CEL or malfunction messages?
