Why is the BMW climate compressor so expensive

So I have been battling the a/c compressor for two years now. At first it was leaking slightly but lasted the summer. Then this last summer it needed to be filled. I asked for an estimate of replacement and it was 2400. I was floored to say the least. Now, it sounds that I drive a diesel due to the compressor bearing rattle. I feel competent that I can remove it and install the new one but would have someone refill it I installed the compressor. So I started looking for a compressor and found a brand new one is 1200. I have found re manufactured ones for 250-500. Not knowing about what is re manufactured besides bearings would the cheaper ones be okay?

They are generic names like new part wholesale and stuff like this. I just can't believe a new one is so freaking much!! Makes me think that the others that I find on the internet that claim to be new are junk or not as good as the OEM part.

After reading more on the compressor people have said that after they start chattering that you need to purge the system to get possible metal bits out due to the compressor going bad. Not sure if this is legit or not but sounds fair. Also I have noticed the gas mileage dip a little. Ugh!!!

Have you checked rockauto.com? They usually have good prices on OE quality stuff. I bought remanufactured calipers from them before for my E46 M3 and they were solid...no issues.

Right, I saw that some are less than half the price. BMW quoted 1300 for the part and ECS has it for 1200. I won't buy parts from eBay. Going back to my original question, why are they so expensive and why are some half the cost for "New"? Has anyone had luck with the $600 part?

Because you're starting with the most expensive sources. Smart owners outside of warranty buy parts from less greedy sources, including wholesale warehouses, used or refurbished. If the seller is reputable, the parts should be reasonably reliable.

I think there is a high markup on BMW parts, just because it is supposed to be a premium luxury brand. I guess they figure that if we own an expensive car, we can afford to pay a premium for the parts.
