Question Max sidewall on 20" wheels?

I'm about due for a new set of tires and I'd like a bigger sidewall. I think the look of the OEM tire spec is a bit too small for the wheel well. Has anyone tried a 45/40 F/R setup?

I just started another thread and asked the same question. I agree., the wheel well is huge. I'll talk to my wheel guy tomorrow and see what he says.

If you want a bigger sidewall, you have to use a smaller rim. The circumference should remain the same.

I don't care about speedometer accuracy. There's approx 0.5-1.0 inch gap between the top of the tire and the front suspension currently. I want to know if a 45 will fit. We're not talking crazy out of spec diameter here.

The trick is there's less clearance on the backside of the suspension piece, aka, there's more than meets the eye. Make sure you put your fingers around the top, inner sidewall of the tire and feel the clearance between the tire and the suspension piece. There's less than 1".

Do I think a larger sidewall from 40 to 45 upfront or 35 to 40 in the rear will fit. My gut tells me yes, but, I'm not 100% and frankly, the clearance will be VERY close where the sidewall rounds to meet the flat contact patch.

Stick your fingers back there and you'll see what I mean.

Hope that's helpful.

Yeah I was ready to take a gamble and started searching for tires but I didn't find any 45/40 combo available for the staggared 20". So my desire is moot unless someone else wants to spend more time researching.

You need to be concerned about the overall diameter and ensuring that the front and rear are exactly the same diameter...maximum overall diameter is 30.5" and the rim/tire must clear the upper suspension piece in the front.

Closest I've found is stretching it in 265/45R20 and 295/40R20 but still has a tenth of an inch difference which is enough to mess with the xdrive. Unless you're running a square setup you will have issues finding the right fitment.

Why don't you use spacer?

For your 09 X5 35d ?

ESC Tuning:
12.5 mm front / 20 mm rear

Front:
https://www.ecstuning.com/b-ecs-part...t/ecs263e70wb/

Rear:
https://www.ecstuning.com/b-ecs-part...t/ecs265e70wb/

You will see your 20" rims and tires larger and will look more agressif

Haha, that is the easier fix to make it fill out more visually, but lowering will help also. If you can't afford full on coilovers then there are a few companies selling lowering springs which only need to be swapped out. Dinan and H&R immediately come to mind. Be weary of certain brands of spacer though as I'm currently working with a company that has an incorrect fitment listed. H&R is a very safe bet though.
