Help me figure out which X6 to buy - Need tire / suspension / etc help...
I currently have a S2000, and a MDX. I am a huge fan of a hard to turn steering wheel.
I have been thinking about getting a new car, and was leaning towards the X4, but drove a X6 the other night. It was a 2012 3.5, with 20" wheels and All season tires. It was the first car in a long time that I really liked. The steering was very tight, and handled great. The next day I drove a 2014 3.5 with 19" wheels, and the steering was still tight, but it didn't feel the same. Thinking it was the tires, I drove a 2014 (5.0) with 20" rims, and it felt the same as the 3.5. I went back and drove the used 2012 again (it was at a different dealer), and it felt much better then the 2 new ones. So, now I am confused. I want the feel of the 2012, but didn't like the config, or the miles on it. Was there a suspension, or steering change between the 2012 and 2014? (BTW, all cars did not have a way to adjust the steering, or suspension). Also, does anyone have an idea what the X4 will drive like? |

Do you know what the package configs were on the 2014s that you drove? Ordinary I would say that the 2014s that you drove probably had active steering (part of the dynamic handling package) and the 2012 did not.
However, I happen to know that there are no 2014s on the ground at any dealer anywhere with the dynamic handling package on it. However, that may not be true if cars can be hidden from the dealer search engine (can they do that?) or if the car is previously titled. Is it possible for them to add active steering w/o adaptive drive or vice versa? I certainly would want AD but no AS (like I have now). My 2012 X6 (no AS) steers much like my old E53 X5. I liked it a lot. However, if you have a rotator cuff injury, navigating parking lots can be painful. And I should says 'steered'. It doesn't do so much steering anymore. My baby is not going to make it out of the hospital alive |

from what I've figured out, is neither of them have the active steering, nor do they have the active drive or dynamic dampers. I am ready to beat my head against the wall.
I am going to another dealer tomorrow night. They have a new 2014, and a used 2012. They both have the sports activity package, but from what I have read, that is mostly cosmetic. |

I've found the steering of BMWs to be inconsistent. The previous gen X5 had brutal steering. I then drove a 2011 X6 with 20s and the steering was much lighter. In in the past I've even test drove a 7 series without sport package (smaller wheels) and one with sports package and guess what? The one WITHOUT sports package had much tighter (firmer) steering.
So it is hit or miss. Do stay away from my old 2012 X6 50i with Active Steering - cause you won't like that!

I just switched from a 2011 x6 5.0 without active steering to a 2014 x6m (I think it comes standard with active steering) and I noticed a considerable change in how it handles. I think if you like the feel of a hard-to-turn steering wheel, you have to go without active steering. I do miss it sometimes on my new car.
