Carbon Fiber Trim Kit

Hi,

Just wanted to point you to a great item to dress up/refresh the interior of your X5.
Very well done, and the way the CF should have been done in the E70, instead of wrapped vinyl!

I'm not affiliated with the seller at all, but I have a very similar kit (same seller) installed in my X5.
He does GREAT WORK, and is Excellent to work with.
He uses perfect used part-stock and re-finishes them in CF, that's why they are listed as "Used".
These are REAL CF, not vinyl wrapped or water transfers.

See photos...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-X5-E70-M...FZgOKB&vxp=mtr

Enjoy,
John

Sweet Jesus they're expensive

Carbon fiber much?

A roll of wrap is $50 and should be able to do all the trim...not sure the price compares. Maybe if he did a core charge for the old trim.

Hi,

Yeah, I did the CF wrap thing myself and had it for several years... It's OK, but not the real thing.

It's not for everyone, just thought I'd share, as some of us go for performance mods, others appearance I guess.
BTW price a new set of "plastic wood" or "wrapped CF" trim from BMW, not nearly as nice and more $$s.

FYI, here's a comparable kit (with fewer pieces) for an F15 at $1200:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-F15-F85-....c100005.m1851

Thanks,
John

The woods real just a layer of veneer, vs just a hydro dipped pattern . But I get what your saying

The "wood" trim in my 2008 X5 was not wood at all, but plastic, have to disagree on that one...
But at the end of the day it's a colored covering to create a contract in textures with the leather and metal, like the CF/Clear coat.

Ok because my 2012 had that wood walnut burl and it's a thin veneer on a plastic carrier. Not sure if the 2008 model year but mine was real wood vs in mold decoration fake wood. I would think BMW would not use fake wood, the reason I mentioned it is because some people think real wood panels are thick wood when their just paper thin veneer mounted to a plastic carrier then thinking its plastic.

The allure of the real vs fake wood is the depth you get from the real grain, much like real carbon vs the hydro graphic stuff which is one dimensional.

I changed mine to aluminum anyhow.

When I had the door caps of my Turbo R refinished, I was amazed at how seriously deep that wood was.

Yea certain woods require certain depths at least that what the suppliers tell us when we pick wood trims for whatever interior design we choose, plus different suppliers do it differently as well so it's a crap shoot.

We can get back on topic and I didn't mean to derail it, just wanted to point out that sometimes what may appear to be plastic wood is indeed real wood but just a thin overlay on a plastic substrate. Just because I deal with it in my industry as a designer. And for the most part BMW used real wood veneer, if it's plastic like he said on the 08, I was surprised but since I don't have the 08 model year I can't comment as mine was a 2012 and that could have changed, that's all. .

how much did the aluminum cost? This CF stuff looks awesome but I cannot justify $1800 for the looks.

I payed $350 for it from a forum member. It was very good condition.

Here a shot after I installed it. It brightened up the interior nicely.

It's also one of the cheaper to buy new vs the wood options if you don't go custom and black piano is one of the most expensive.

ya I am not a fan of the wood. Makes the interior feel dated and depressing. I think going aluminum would be a good idea.

They sell it new? I wonder if I could buy it in pieces as to not have it hurt all at once.

Sure can, OEM's are required by law to have new parts for around 10 years after a model ends, some OEM's will continue making parts well after a model year because the numbers support it. You can still buy new parts for the BMW E30 as well as OEM body panels and such for a 30+ year old car.

BMW sells the Aluminum trim actually in a retrofit kit so all pieces priced as one ( cheaper ).

Or you can buy piece by piece, what i would do is check on eBay for the pieces being sold by them selves and make sure their mint and no marks and get them on the cheap, then buy the new ones over time for the ones you cant find on the web.

Also buy from either getbmwparts.com or deal with a dealer that gives you the 20% off club deal.

What was required to swap your steering wheel to the newer version? I would love to do that. Really makes the interior more modern.

You need to find a F10 steering wheel, the f10 and the e70 share the same steering shaft, theirs two different newer designs, this one and the other without the gap in between the center spoke you decide what is right for you.

Make sure when you buy the wheel that the airbag is a dual stage airbag to keep with your current North American wiring setup. Lots of the ones on eBay are from Europe and have a single stage and you would have to recode the car.

Many sellers though have the ability to get you a dual stage for a little more money.

This wheel fully loaded with vibro and heat and airbag was $1900 brand new. The deals are out their and these can be had for much less, I've seen them go for as little as $350 used. You just have to keep checking. Wayyyyyyyy cheaper than the dealer.

The last piece of the puzzle is the module from car systems, they sell the module that sets up the wheel to work with the e70.

I have full functions of the wheel and the cruise control now works from the steering wheel vs the lever in the back of the wheel. Now accelerating and decelerating can be done with your thumb vs having to keep playing with the lever in back. That alone was worth the price of the mod because of all my highway driving.

The other reason for the mod is it was about two years before my airbag would be replaced and that's a best guess, and my wife was scared if she got into a wreck what would happen so this puts a new modern airbag that doesn't have the recall issue.

I've been thinking about sprucing up my X5's interior, and it's great to know there's a quality option out there. Authentic carbon fiber definitely adds a touch of luxury. I'll check out the seller you mentioned.

You can get it for 500-650 now, the sellers aren't on ebay often, but i can put you in touch with someone that i have bought 3 kits for, including having him do my engine cover.

PM me and I'll give you his whatsapp or email, he is legit and trusted
