New N63 motor break-in questions

I'm sure most on here are aware of the issues i've had with my recently purchased 2013 X5 50i. Short story is that its getting a new N63 motor from BMW(with 2 year unlimited mileage warranty from BMW).
I was wondering what the recommended engine break-in procedure is? Also, what oil is recommended as well as oil change intervals?

I normally buy used...I hope the PO's followed break in instructions lol.

Looks like you shouldn't go over 4500 rpm and accelerate slowly for 1200 miles. Then oil change and you should be good to go. I watched a video a while back where Horse Power Freaks built an S54 engine. They showed how the cylinders of stock motored are misshapen and have burrs etc...so when the pistons run through them the walls get shaved up. A bunch of metal should come out in the first oil change.

First 1000 km (should be around 8xx miles): below 3000 rpm
second 1000 km (max 4000 rpm)
Oil change
Max rpms not before 5000km

Do not stand for a long period with the same rpm. Don't use the speed control and change gears manually (or with the sport setting) during long highway periods.

Try to use the 2000 rpm to 3000 rpm range.

BMW use 0W-30. I asked them to fill in 0W-40 which is on the LL-01 list and which is the recommended oil according to the manual of the car.

Normaly I use 10W-60 with my cars but N63's turbos seems to need the 0w- (at least in colder areas). In Texas I would use Castrol Supercar 10W-60 or the Mobil-1 0W-50 which can deal with the amount of heat...

The 4500 rpm statement is nonsense. A BMW M motor is good for 9000 rpms and the gear is adjusted to this. 50% of 9000 is 4500 so we have to use 6000/2 = 3000 to keep with the picture.

Download a (for example) E46 M3 manual and read the drive in instructions there which are very detailed.

Use the best available gasoline with the highest octane number. The engine does not need more than 95 octane to reach the power but every tick above 95 makes it less probable to get too early burns around soot particles. My english is too bad to explain this in the necessary technical specs... can we switch to German please? :-)
In Germany I use gasoline with more than 100 octane.

Thank you gentlemen for your replies and info! I'll follow the procedure to a T and run the highest octane I can get(91-93).

Also, to gain valuable knowledge, I would search the internet for "BMW n63 workbook". There is an OEM engine information book out there that outlines the entire motor, it is a very good read.
