Differences between 2007 and 2011 X5

Can Someone tell me the mechanical differences between these 2 vehicles? I see tail lights and 1 has a rear display. I wonder which has been taken care of the best. The 2011 has almost as many miles as the 2007 but the price difference is almost double. Why?

The 2011 has 40 more hp. Is that all? Are these 2 totally different engines? But even 360hp is alot. So.. Is it that .uch better? Like double the price? Usually people who put on a lot of miles quickly tend to not change the oil as often. So i dunno about the 2011. Maybe the 2007 was taken care of better?

These vehicles plummet in value as the years pass, so one being 4 years older means it's worth quite a bit less. And there's some notable differences…

While they're the same bodystyle/chassis (E70), they are quite different - the 2011-2013 models are known as LCI (Life Cycle Impulse - BMW lingo for mid-life updates). For the E70 LCI, the updates weren't the typical bumper/wheel/trim updates, they included updated engines and transmissions (diesel got all the other LCI updates - no change to engine/transmission).

2007-2010 the V8 was badged 4.8i (4.8L naturally aspirated V8 - 350 HP/350 TQ)
2011-2013 the V8 was badged xDrive50i (4.4L twin turbo - 400 HP/450 TQ)

The 2011+ also got the updated 8 speed automatic (vs. a 6 speed).

Other updates includes the LED rear tails lights, updated bumpers, etc. 2012 & 2013 models will have the LED coronas.

Sounds like you need to do some research These vehicles came equipped a million different ways (very different from your Acura…but maybe you have prior BMW ownership experience?) - if your particular about packages/options you should probably get familiar with a BMW VIN decoder if you aren't already. Or you could ask here if you're not sure

I'd personally get one with the Sport or M Sport package (M Sport would be 2011-2013 only). Also, that 2011 says it's a Sport but it's not - has the 20" Sport wheels (style 214) but it has the non-sport steering wheel, no fender flares, and chrome window trim (Sport & M Sport would have black). It does have the multi-contour seats (sounds like they're even ventilated) which is a big plus.

The '07 is a Sport model and has Adaptive Drive - that's a big plus!

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the replies and the detailed response. I just learned something. The sport package has the Sport Button by the shifter. And that 2011 does not have it! wild.

I had an Old BMW once years ago. That is all. I suppose the 2007 "does" have the sport package? THe trim is black and not chrome like the 2011. I don't even know what is included in the sport package. haha Its impossible to know all the differences and search for keywords about differences that you do not know what they are.. Because you cant search for something you dont know what it is.. haha right?

Anyway, I'm beginning to wonder if that 2011 even has twin turbo.. haha like since it doesn't have the sport package. But Its easy to spot the twin turbos and hear it ..

I wonder if that naturally aspirated would last longer than the turbo.. Or is that an old stigma?

thanks-

The 'Sport' button behind the gear selector typically has no affiliation to the Sport Package - for the 2007-2010 it may have been included (I'm not as familiar with pre-LCI models), but not on 2011+. That button is the Adaptive Drive option - very desirable & quite rare.

Sport Package, off the top of my head includes -

-Sport steering wheel
-19" wheels instead of 18" (w/ 20" being optional)
-shadowline exterior window trim (instead of chrome)
-anthracite headliner (instead of gray)
-I believe on the older 4.8's included the Adaptive Drive option?

The 2011 is a TT if it's a 50i - the Sport package and motor have no affiliation. All 2011 50i's will have the same twin turbo V8 engine - the Sport Package, Premium Package, etc., are all optional equipment…selected after you make your engine choice. There are other motors besides the V8 - a 6 cylinder diesel (X35d) and 6 cylinder gas (X35i), and the ///M model (X5M) which also has a twin turbo V8, but a revised/enhanced version to that in the 50i.

Check out this site - it will spell out all the available packages/options for 2011 X5's. You can always Google '20XX X5 options list' for example…

Actually the V8 in 2007 didn't come badged as an xdrive4.8i. It only said 4.8i. Not sure if there is any difference with the awd system

Good catch….updated my prior post.

No change in the AWD system….just the badging.

1 more question. I am now looking at a 2012 50i but it has the smaller wheels. He said 18 and 19 on rear. So, is the only difference just the wheel size or does the larger wheels also come with a heavier anti sway bar and tighter springs..? If it's just wheels I might just swap out wheels.. but I don't want to mess with sway bars. Getting too old to buy any vehicles that are not the way I want them. I'd rather just get the right one from the beginning. Thanks!

Is it normal to cut the bumper out when installing a hitch. ? It should be good for towing a car though.

Sway bars have nothing to do w/ X5 packaging.

The E70 xDrive50i comes in 3 trims - Base, Sport, & M Sport. The Base has 18 inch wheels standard, nothing else optional.

The Sport and M Sport come standard with 19 inch wheels, and those wheel styles are different based on trim. 20" wheels are optional with both Sport and M Sport, and again those 20" wheel styles are different based on trim.

If you get the Sport Package over Base you get more than just the bigger wheels, you get the fender flares, sport steering wheel, anthracite headliner, shadowline window trim...maybe something else I'm missing. M Sport adds the painted body trim, different body kit, M Sport door sills, M Sport Steering wheel, ///M dead pedal...and Jerez Black paint is available only with M Sport models.

That's the OEM hitch kit. I think it's ridiculous that the bumper has to be cut, but yes that's how that kit works. There are other options available. I did the Execuhitch...no bumper cutting, and no receiver hitch showing when not in use.

ok thanks for the info on all that, and the hitch.

So, if I read you correctly, the sway bars and spring rates are the same across the lineup and the only differences in the packages are visual and maybe a different seat or steering wheel? Nothing different on the suspension beside the wheels? Seems odd to have bigger wheels but not a stiffer suspension..

I drove an x5 that is here in town, and it was a 2012 50i and they said to not shut it off because the battery was dead. And so I took off, and the the navigation gave a message. It said xdrive malfunction. Please see a BMW dealer.. this one had chrome wheels, but oem style and 11 inches wide so they looked oem.. just never seen chrome ones. And it had a few little dings. Not sure how you get a ding on an x5 sitting so high and plus the shape of the doors, it goes IN as it gets higher. So really confused how you get a door ding on these.. anyway.. the interior was lovely! Just it has been treated rough... how sad. I was ready to buy... but not for a problem...gad. makes me wonder "is this why they tried it off?" It only had 46k miles.

Did you buy an X5. Sent you a PM as well. It's possible the battery can cause those issues.
