x5m maintenance question

Well I'm approaching 1200 miles on my 2011 x5m, so far its been flawless and worked wonderfully for me. Now i know that there is a break-in period for m3's, m5's etc, but is there the same break-in for the x5m? When i picked up the car i was told to take it easy for the first 1200 miles until the car fully breaks-in. I'm at about 1190 miles and I called the dealer where I got the x5m to make an appointment for the break-in maintenance but was then told that i don't have to come in until the regular oil change time of ~12,000-15,000 miles, (whenever the iDrive tells me to change oil).

Have any of you x5m/x6m owners done the break-in maintenance on your x5m or do you just wait until regular oil change time?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I just experienced the same thing today. Made an apt for a 1200 mile service last week and when I got to the dealer they said it doesn't require one. They said to come back around 13500 miles

I think it is because BMW pays for the oil and why pay for a extra change at 1200 miles when the oil is good until 12-15k

That is the way it works. You bring it in when the car tells you to. Mine was around 15K miles for first change. Am at 25K now and will bring it in for 30K service before the oil needs changing based on what my car is telling me. I do 90% highway driving.....Steve

Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I called my dealership to make an appointment for the 1200 mile break-in period check-up because I was told so by my SA when I purchased the car. I was called back the day before my appointment by the Service Department to tell me there is no maintenance for my vehicle and that I didn't have to come in. I then, called my SA and asked him to confirm this info. He phoned me back after speaking to someone at BMWNA and was told out of all the M's, the X5M and X6M didn't need the maintenance.

Thanks for the replies everybody. I'm gonna have to go in anyway so they can fix a small windshield crack from a rock.
Anyone have a clue as to why it isn't required for the x5/6m to go through break-in service like the other m's?

Steve how is your car at the 25k mark, any problems on the way?

The truck runs perfect and it is as good as it was the day I picked it up. There was one service campaign that they asked me to bring the car in for but otherwise no issue at all.

I think the reason that the X5-6M does not need a 1200 mile break-in is that it is a lower compression lower reving FI engine compared to the high-comp high-rev NA motors that have tighter tolerances to achieve and maintain their compression ratio.

BMW pays for maintenance for all their new cars and I expect that they look forward to CPOing cars that come off lease.

So to me, they balance maintenance costs with long term durability. its not like their cars fall apart the second you turn your lease in......Steve

Cool, it doesn't have to go through 1,200 miles break in.... BMW here doesn't pay for maintenance... We buy our own oil... Warranty is 2 years unlimited mileage.

There is still a break-in period! Just no break-in maintenance visit needed to the Service Center for an oil change/check-up.

Read page 138 of the (X5M) manual

3 Questions

1- How to start a new post on this forum other than a reply.

2- I was told by local BMW dealer that any modification with my car can nullify my warranty. I wanted to put some LEDs on my front bumper. I have 2011 X5.

3- I purchased my car in June 2010. The ones after April 2011 have the new BMW Apps, is there anyway I can get that in my car.

Thanks a lot.

They redline the engine at the factory for a few minutes iirc. So break is period on all other parts is one heat cycle. I've been beating on mine since it left the lot, 01 miles on it

Ok so no need for 1200 break-in service. Has anyone added spacers to the truck? It could really use some 15mm's or even 18's on the rear, any thoughts? Or even opinions on other must-do mods

I put on mudflaps and 3M'd my vehicle due to all the complaints about the paint chipping issues. I also swapped out my runflats for Continental DWS's. I know my choices are not for everyone, but for my car those were very important necessary upgrades IMO and I'm very happy with the results (just not the extra cost associated with them.)

It's true that they redline the engine. We went to Regensburg plant back in 2009 to take the free factory tour. We started from a sheet of metal to a complete car. We even went to the M3 factory racing build up. No pictures were allowed though. One M3, was being tested after the body was drop on the drive line. It wasn't that long....

Some guy put a set of H&R spacers on his 35d.... I don't know how much wider the X5M's fenders are though.
