Velos vs JB4 - stock otherwise

New to the forum and have found awesome info thus far!

So my situation is I have a 13 X5m with aftermarket warranty. While I'd love to get a tune done, I would hate to jeopardize the warranty (should something catastrophic happen, I don't know how much BMW might investigate to find a way to pin the blame on me - even if I change to stock tune prior to taking it in).

However, I don't plan on doing any other mods to the car in terms of exhaust etc. So wondering if anyone has had experience with both JB4 and Velos tunes (especially in stock form otherwise) and their opinions? I know Velos is currently having a special, but JB4 is very affordable even at it's regular price.

If you're concerned about warranty, I think Dinan is your only answer.

If you want the most performance, I believe Velos will be your answer. And you can remove it before servicing if needed. Though I recommend removing it at least a week before planned major service. I do this with my Cobb Accessport on my 3.0 X5.

If you care about neither... JB4.

I have both Velos Stage 2 and JB4. JB4 offers similar power (per my butt dyno) and also offers additional features like data logging and on the fly switching.

JB4 is also half the cost.

JB4 can be removed and would be in traceable, but not as easily as the Velos tune.

If I were doing it from the start all over I would only get the JB4 and not the Velos.

Regarding JB4 not making power, there are M5's running 800+ whp with the JB4. Granted that engine is slightly different (S63 in the E70 vs S63Tu in the M5).

I'll post soon. I have had Velos stage two for some time and happy with it. Putting on JB4 now. Been to dealer a number of times with Velos still installed...zip from the dealer.

Interested to hear! And curious as to why you decided to go to JB4 now....

Same boat. Checked out Dinan, but after 50k miles, they don't stand behind warranty

Would love to get a tune, but just afraid of losing warranty if something happened.

Waiting to see if Velos tune pricing changes with any specials, but even the regular JB4 pricing seems so enticing.

But thats why I was hoping for personal experiences with both to see if anyone was significantly impressed/disappointed with one vs the other.

The X5m felt awesome at first, but now I'm getting desperate for a tune - the turbo lag is becoming increasingly annoying.

I recently purchased a 2013 X5 50i CPO. I have an ESS Tune and have had it to the dealer multiple times for both N63 issues and other with no issues. It takes a laptop and about 10 minutes to flash back to stock before going to the dealer and another 10 to flash the tune again when you get it back. I highly recommend going the ESS route...

No matter which type of tune you go with, the dealer WILL know if you're tuned or not... just because they don't say anything doesn't mean they don't know. Tunes will ALWAYS throw some type of shadow code... ask me how I know

I asked Velos about that and was told:

"the modified tune can only be read if the ECU is sent to Europe where they can read what is on the ECU"

Velos along with other tuners out there will tell us anything to move their product and make a sale. My buddy is an BMW Master Tech who has been involved in BMW PuMA cases, PuMA is a worldwide BMW database of all reported problems and most with their appropriate fixes

With the jb4 for the x5m is it similar to the 335i N54 one?

Biggest concern would be having multiple maps that could run different psi and meth injection

You can run different maps with the JB4 on the X5M. These maps can easily changes on the fly via the steering wheel as well. The unit can also be disabled entirely bi the steering wheel.

I have velos, it's served me well for 2 years. These cars are flawless once they repair the normal things that go wrong. Once my starter, vent lines, injectors were all new the car has not been back other then normal service. 14k-50k mileage
