For me (2017 F33), the rear brake shield that was on the car was fine. Plenty of clearance for the 345mm rotors. I think BMW was trying to reduce the number of different parts they used, so they used one shield for all non-M rear rotors.

Did you upgrade the brakes by individually purchasing all the parts? Did you save money this way vs buying a entire kit?

I bought the parts individually. The big savings was buying used calipers from eBay. If I were to buy all new, the kit would be much less expensive.
