Whistle noise at 2K RPM

Hello,

I have had this issue since day 1. It has been 2 years already and the dealers still can't fix the problem.

I have decided to upload a sound clip. As you can hear from it, when I hold the RPM at around 2000, a sharp whistle noise appears.

Anyone has similar experiences?

That's kind of cool! It has to be something with either the airbox and/or wastegates. I would try without airfilter and see if that makes a difference - if it doesn't make a difference then I think you might have an issue with the turbo.

I've got good news and bad news...

I have the same whistle in my 1M at exactly 2K (and a bit higher). It goes away once the car is warmed up. I do like the sound -but agree, it would be bad in the X5/X6. Since we have a different turbo setup, I suspect that it is not the wastegates (plus I would expect that noise under load if it was them). So I suspect it is something with the air intake. Does your sound go away after it is warmed up?

Hello Doug, thanks for the advise.

The dealers had replaced the wastegate. They initially thought that was the problem too. That didn't fix the problem.

The sound occurs consistently, regardless of the engine temperature.
Even if I drive for over an hour, the whistle still occurs.

The noise is more noticeable when starting from a complete stop in D gear (or M2).

I do like the sound of turbo - but only like those constant air-sucking sound when sports car accelerates.
This one sounds broken to me..

Yep, could hear that on the sound clip

We don't think it is that. 1. He already had it replaced, 2. I have it on my 1M (and my 1M is the N54 engine - so it has a completely different turbo setup - 2 vs. 1). I really suspect it is something to do with the air intake. I would try removing the air cleaner maybe?

I have the same thing on my diesel. The noise is there, but it's not that loud yet, but it is getting louder and more frequent. I have 1,5 years left of my warranty, so I'm waiting for it to get more "visible" for the BMW to do something about it.
