Burning Smell AFTER Turning Car off - X5M
Car is sitting at the dealer right now, they are trying to figure it out. But i am in the last 3 days of CPO warranty and hoping for some insight.
Here's the problem: After driving a full temp (not aggressively, just normal driving), and shutting the car off, after 5 minutes you can smell burning from the rear of the engine bay by the windshield. Not smelled in the cabin. The engine shield appears to not be broken, i'm not noticing any oil problems, etc. Anybody have a similar problem? note that you only smell it after the car is off, when its on, either the smell is not present or is being pushed somewhere else.

In my case I could also smell it and the vacuum breather line was leaking oil near turbo. The reason of the burning smell is just one when leaking oil comes in contact with any hot metal or the engine bay temperatur are high. Did you check if you have oil pan gasket leak or vacuum pump leaks as those will also result in burning oil smell |

I'm not sure if its an oil burning smell or more of a metallic burning smell. I had the tech come out to the car and smell it and he confirmed something is "off" after they sent me on my way 3 other times. The clock is ticking at this point, i guess

As long as a problem is logged with the dealership, you shouldn't need to worry about warranty expiry. Most definitely sounds like an oil leak somewhere.

Also consider the option to extend Cpo if that’s possible. I think warranty extensions can be done until your car is still in warranty Good luck 🍀 |

That is what i was thinking actually, something dripping on the DPs.
I'm very disappointed with the dealer right now, i've gotten zero update from them, this is the third time i've had them look into this issue. At what point do i call BMW NA? The car is out of warranty as of thursday this week

Haha, thank you...I've just had the same thing happen is all :-) Buddy and I did it in about 3hrs, just replaced the gasket...removing the passenger side downpipe seemed the easiest way.

They just told me the smell is "normal" and the rear main seal is beginning to "sweat" so they are replacing that. I just did lots of research and havent seen any documented cases of rear main seal failure on the X5M, but i suppose anything is possible? I am going to push for vacuum pump seal as well

My first thought is the plastics at the rear of the engine bay. In my case they melted so badly they dripped on the downpipe cover and would just continually melt and harden until I figured it out and scraped off the residue.
May not be your issue, but that's exactly how I would have explained it. Though... after really hard drives it would smoke a bit. |

Tech confirms "something is off", suddenly they're potentially outta pocket for repairs and now it's "normal"...jesus these stealerships never stop living up to their reputations.
Rear main seal is a bitch though since the transmission needs to be removed, so doing the vacuum pump gasket is child's play since they're in there. |

At this point, do you think it would be worthwhile calling BMW NA and opening up a case?

Yes, but at a lower rate...there's no way BMW NA is going to pay local shop rates. BMW stealerships get to screw the customers, not the other way around.
If they're replacing the seals, what are you opening a case about? I've never had a CPO vehicle so I'm not sure how the whole process works. I've called BMW NA once about my injectors, they turned a def ear and acted like they knew nothing about the issue when I mentioned it's an N54 issue and we used the same ones...a month later the warranty replacement offer came out. Is the talk that it could be "the normal smell of the cats" total bullsh*t? is is possible for these cars to have a smell to them thats normal due to the high heat?

I guess wait and see if it's leaking, but something has to be dripping, melting, etc near, on or around the exhaust to be causing that smell. I'd imagine a leaking RMS is only going to leave a puddle in your garage...unless the weeping is coming outta the transmission and flinging backwards onto some parts of the exhaust.
Unless you have no cats, your exhaust shouldn't smell different than any other car.

I’m having a similar prob but I’m also wondering if this is normal ??? But I did have the truck in to get inspected for the smell as well as an idling issue ... the idling issue is fixed and the smell is better prior to the work they did it def seem more strong and I could smell it more often ... now it’s more faint and I smell it now and then to the point I’m wondering if I’m start to exaggerate the situation???? But recently I had someone with me and they just randomly said they smelled something burning ... and so far they replaced the valve covers
Hollywoodsx5 what were your results ?? |
