2013 X5 door lock actuator motor

Hello all,

Has anyone experienced a similar issue with the door locking mechanism. I have soft close and comfort package on this car. The soft close works perfectly, if I put my hand in the door handle it unlocks, if I use the key to lock and unlock the door it works perfectly, however, if I am inside of the car and try to pull the door handle manually, I have resistance and the button does not go up to unlock the door. I can unlock using my key or the UNLOCK button on the dash.

Any ideas what could be the issue with this door lock?

Are you saying that you cannot unlock the door from the inside using the interior door handle?

Yes Werdn, That is precisely what I am saying. As you pull on the handle you feel a resistance. The button raises a 1/4 of the way and as you release the handle it goes back down to lock position.

My X5 doesn't have soft close doors, since it is pre LCI.

However, is the door one of the rear passenger ones? If it is, it might be because the baby lock function is activated.

Also, have you changed any settings on your car recently?

I did not change any settings at all on the car. The door having this issue is the driver door.

I simply put "bmw door wouldnt unlock from inside" into Google.

The issue seems to the the "door lock actuator". You may have to get it replaced at a BMW Dealer, or buy the part yourself from a site like ECS Tuning or FCP Euro, and do it yourself.

Here is a DIY video on a E70 X5, however, I would imaging the inside of your door panels to have more wiring because of the soft close doors.

As you mentioned the E70 DYI is for a E70 without a soft close door. Thanks to you I have researched the part I need and the OEM part number for the my driver side is 51 217315 019. The price for this actuator motor on line is in the $400 range. I imagine the dealer will charge me around $700 to install it. So, here I go trying to replace it myself.

What I worry about are not the wiring but rather the Glass. The motor is two parts and rather large and I wonder if the glass will be in the way!

I don't think the glass should be much of a problem if the windows are rolled up.

Good luck on your DIY project! One tip is give yourself plenty of time to do this job. The video is a bit over 30 minutes, but I would assume that it will take between 2-3 hours. The thing about working with cars is that you never know what might be different or go wrong, such as a stuck screw, or the panel having a hard time coming off the door.
