2009 X5 questions
hi, as previsous owner of a 2001 x5 4.4i, a 2004 545i touring and now a 2006 130i i am interested again in buying the latest x5.
the 4.8i is no option due to the high fuel costs nor is diesel (which is the most sold x5 in europe). so i was thinking of the 3.0i. used to the 130i 5 door, my main objection to this engine in the x5 is its lack of sheer power (in such a heavy car). so the 3.5i would be a better option..... seeing the new idrive system in 1, 3, 5 and 7 series i really mis that in the x5 too. is there any news on a modification or release of both a 3.5i engine and new idrive system in the x5 ? thanks, mike

Right now the consensus points to the new i-drive (CIC) available in Sept 09 as an 10 model. There is a small possibility that the i-drive controller (knob) will be fitted into the X5/X6 in the spring but will still use the old i-drive menus/software. There is some possibility that Sept 09 will also see the LCI for the X5 ... probably will not find out for sure until the X5M/X6M are shown at a car show and BMW informs everyone with a press release. I'm hoping that BMW will give out the info at the Geneva show in Mar.

I think BMW is in a tight spot with the X5 from a fuel economy point of view. The X6 gets the TT, but it is a low volume niche vehicle. The mass consumption X5 needs to be better than competing models from both a performance and fuel economy perspective. That is the 35d. |

I know you said you didn't want the diesel, but we just got the 09 X5 35d diesel and the drive train is amazing! Quiet, just a light purr, and silly fast with those sequentially spooling turbos. A very peaceful ride - trust me, my wife picked the diesel and she is picky. She drove all three engines and it was a no brainer for her. Instant love.
BTW- we are getting 29 highway, 24 city. And I filled up for $1.99 the other day in Colorado. No smell, no black. As fast as my m3 stoplight to stoplight. Diesel technology isn't the diesel of old days. Remember, the fastest Audi R8 made is that new diesel model they are racing on the circuit. (is the diesel sold in the Netherlands?) |

I have had the X5 diesels since the early 2000's and with the current 35d Twin Turbo Diesel with 600nm you would be mad to buy the 6 cyl petrol.
Even the new X5 M V8tt has only 680nm, the current diesel is plenty powerful and on top of that you get the economy saving! and less service intervals.
