E70 Air Scoops

I've had these on a couple 3 Series projects and they always seem to work great. Wonder why nothing is available for the 50i and 35i?

The intake on the 50i is a cluster...a jumble of tubes changing directions in 180 degree turns and going through restrictive airboxes with built-in restrictor plates ...there is no simple fix. Do a "was that so hard?" search of this forum and you will see plenty of posts on this. Dinan has an upcoming intake system which hopefully will solve the problem.

I browsed the various posts, even poked around under the hood of ours.

For instance there has been debate as to if the 50i has charcoal filters or not on the X5 model. One member said he had them and removed them, others state they're not there. My 13 does not have them.

The intake system is not overly complicated nor a "cluster" as there are some deliberate pathways to cause minimal turbulence prior to the turbos. While I don't work on intake systems for a living I do work for a performance exhaust company (www.mbrp.com) and have a firm grasp on how airflow works when traveling at high speeds.

I am interested in what Dinan comes up for a complete intake. However, the factory system would benefit from a denser inlet charge provided by something like the scoops I mentioned in the first post. A part that, apparently, is not developed at this time.

There is extensive discussion of this topic in this thread:

http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showt...ght=N63+tuning

As you can see in the posted schematics of the intake, the air path of the 50i changes directions 180 degrees not once but twice before entering the turbos, in addition to going through the restrictor plate intake as I mentioned earlier. I consider this a cluster, a jumble, or a big mess. It's clearly designed more to limit intake sound than to provide ideal airflow. I have never seen any other car with a more complicated intake pathway, nor have I ever heard of a company making the airboxes so difficult to access and bolting them shut. Compare it to the straight through intake on the M and you will see what I mean.

Air scoops aren't likely to be very effective here, IMO, due to the jumbled airflow on the intake and the fact that the X5 already has its air intakes coming straight off the grille openings. What it needs is all new tubing and less restrictive airboxes going straight into the turbos. Luckily there is an option coming out soon.

If your 50i is stock, I highly recommend starting with a tune. The stock tuning really is very conservative, not just with boost but also with throttle response and shifting. The Dinan stage 2 is good for 100 hp, and it completely transforms the performance. After the tune it is much closer to the M than the stock 50i.
