Exclamation Recall: 2009-2012 BMW X5 35d

BMW has issued a recall on 2009-2012 X5 35d for a power steering issue. An engine part could break and causes loss of power steering.

Vehicle Make / Model:
Model Year(s):
BMW / X5 SAV
2009-2012

Manufacturer:
BMW of North America, LLC
Report Receipt Date:
NOV 27, 2012
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number:
12V550000
NHTSA Action Number:
N/A

Component:
STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
Potential Number of Units Affected:
29,800

Summary:
BMW is recalling certain model year 2009-2012 X5 xDrive 35d SAV diesel vehicles manufactured September 1, 2008, through November 15, 2012. The engine belt idler pulley bolt could loosen and break over time.

Consequence:
If the engine belt idler pulley bolt breaks, the vehicle may unexpectedly lose power-assisted steering, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace and tighten the idler pulley bolt. The recall is expected to begin during January 2013. Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.

Notes:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Our bolt broke last month and it was replaced. I wonder if they I'll need to take it back (i.e., they've designed or spec'd a different bolt). I guess I'll wait to get an official notification....

I can't believe this. The dealership didn't tighten my belt enough that when I start my engine, the belt squeals. What sucks even more is I don't have time to take it because they are so busy. I so dislike Charleston BMW......
