Just picked up 2011 X6M
After several months of debate, I finally picked up CB 2011 X6M. I was quite sad to let my beloved 2008 135i go. 1 series was such a fun car to drive and my every day commute was quite a joy. But I got tired of checking out the weather so decided to take X6. In the power department, I don't miss 1 at all but still need to get used to X6 handling compared to 1 series. These are totally two different classes so I should not compare but I want to comment on one thing.
I really don't understand those who say X5/6 steering is too heavy possibly due to huge tires. I can tell you this. X6 steering is feather light compared to my 1 or previous any bimmers I have ever driven. So this is my only complaint or something I am trying to get used to. Now I need an excuse to go out. |

I came from a 135i,loved that car,i thought the steering in the x6 would be harder but i found it to be lighter than the 1er,a bit of a surprise really.

Good for you the X6M is better than anyone could know that does not own one. I traded an 08 M3 for my X5M and do not miss it at all. Congrats and enjoy.......Steve

I took 135i photo just before heading for a dealer so it is dirty. So far I have it for 2 days. When I am in the city, I got little over 11mpg. Then I got close to 19-20 mpg cruising at 60 m/h on the high way for 30 miles. However, as soon as I press gas pedal to pass or have some fun, mpg dropped. I hope that a gas tank is bigger than 22 gallons. Anyway, my wife and kids thinks that X6M is a very smooth car (even softer than my 2005 x5 with a sport package) when I did not press EDC or M buttons. So this car seems to cover everyone's needs for now. |

Congrats on the car!
Regarding the steering: Once you press M button (or EDC), it will stiffen the streering wheel and suspension It's a transformation from super comfort to super sport |

I have to play with it little more. I can definitely feel the throttle response change but am not sure with steering wheel. I am not saying it is bad but it is very different from my previous experience. I just need to get used to it.

Regarding the steering...
I strongly suspect that the X5 steering is stiffer (harder if you will) than the X6. I've driven several X5s and could not believe how hard it was to turn the wheel (I have a 2008 M5 and it is feather light compared to the X5). I then drove a X6 with active steering and thought "Wow, that's the fix, perfect". But then I recently drove a X6 WITHOUT Active steering. I commented to the salesperson (this was a Jaguar dealer) and she agreed with me. Said that when they get a X5 in on trade, she hates driving it around -even the parking lot because of the steering - but this X6, without active steering was not bad at all.
Now I realize you are talking the M (no AS), but when I test drove the X5M I thought the steering was just as bad as the X5 50/35... |
