X5M - Engine Vent Pipe Warranty

I recently picked up an X5M and wanted to know what warranty items the car still has. In a call with BMWNA they noted there was coverage for an Engine Vent Pipe for 10yrs, 120k miles. The representative mentioned that this was recently released and some dealers may not be aware of this. So if anybody is having issue with this, it may be covered by the BMW.

There are three major ones, two run on the side of the engine to the bottom of the block (bitch to change) and one across the heat shield brace up top. I just patched a side one up (Bank 1) until I have time to get in there and do something about it but it's not a permanent fix.

I'm wondering if this extended coverage is on all three or a specific one. Would be good to know as I've had to replace the top one and side one (Bank 2) once already.

Subscribed.

I need to bring in my car to the dealer soon to have the airbag replaced. Hopefully I can get some more details on this.

Mine were replaced by the PO right before I got the car and they're already leaking again. I priced the parts out to do it myself...Pricey little buggers. Gotta take mine in for alignment soon and I'll see if they'll still cover them.

Ive changed the one on the top when I got the P112F code. Made it go away, but I didnt know about the ones on the side of the engine, anyone have a diagram of the ones on the side of the engine? or part numbers?

Does anybody have the part number for part that goes between #1 & #3; and also #3 & #2?

Also the vent hose for cylinder 1-4 has a part# that was superseded.

My vent hoses were replaced by the PO in 2013.
I wonder if the issue is because the engine is producing more crankcase pressure than it should, causing leaks? Is there a filter that might be clogged?

It's possible.

I've also had the replace one of these, Bank 2.

I’m not an engineer nor do I know a lot of details of this engine… so I might be completely wrong. If we’re getting a lot of oil leaking from the pipe going over the engine, then we’re getting poor oil/gas separation. From my understanding, these pipes should be carrying clean blow-by gases back to the intake system through a check-valve.

Oil residue from these pipes should be normal but any more than that, I think there’s a problem with the separation. BMW could be masking this separation issue by replacing the vent hoses.
Well then again…I’m no expert.

From what I understand, the oil in these vent pipes serves to lube the snails. Not sure if actually true because a lot of guys, across numerous platforms with BMWs turbo engines, install catch cans to capture the oil. As far as I know, they have zero issues with turbos not being lubed. So there's that...

1: The turbochargers have their own pressurized oil supply from the block. They don't have anything to do with the crankcase ventilation system in discussion here.

2: Part of the crankcase ventilation system's function is to condense crankcase oil vapor and return it to the oil pan. By definition it will have oil within its pipe network. It is supposed to be a sealed system. If it's leaking then the only common reason would be a cracked component or deteriorated O-ring (of which there are many). If there is excessive amounts of oil vapor within the crankcase which the system cannot keep up with (excessive blow-by for example), then it may come under positive pressure which would force some oil past the system's seals. I suspect most leaks are just due to failing O-rings or deteriorated/cracking plastic pipes. It's all plastic, in a very hot engine bay.

I highly doubt these tubes provide oil for the turbos. Yeah I've noticed that too about BMW owners installing oil catch cans and completely agree with it since most are looking for performance upgrades. I think if most people see the fumes that come out of your crankcase, even after being filtered, they will probably consisder an oil catch can instead of a CAI as their first mod. Though most setups that people run are bad for the environment.

Btw, with how fast turbo impellers spin and the amount of heat it builds up, I think nearly all turbo systems need oil for lubrication and cooling.

Great! Keep us posted if you bring it in for replacement. I wonder if they will just look for an oil leak and if so replace all the vent pipes.

Is this for all the vent pipes? The dealer told me only the top one was covered. I have to pay for the side ones at $1300 each?? Leaving the top one as they say it is still good.

Hmm, good to know about the warranty. My CCV hose that goes over the top of the engine that connects the two banks failed. It was making a high pitched squeal and puking oil. I touched it and it disintegrated on me.

Anyway went to the dealer and replaced it for 65. I wish I had know it's under warranty but hey it's not exactly a ton of money.

Btw, I don't think mileage is a factor in their failure. It's age and heat, mine is a 2011 with 43k miles and like a lot of engine bay plastics it was extremely brittle. I'm looking at those crappy rain trays as well...

I replaced my side pipes with hydraulic hose, so they won't be breaking again anytime soon. Bitch to replace though.

Thats smart. I thought about replacing my crapped out hose with a silicone pipe, as I'm sure that shitty plastic pipe BMW uses will dry out and crack again in a couple of years. Plus its a lot cheaper than BMW's custom parts.
