What is the point of an alarm if it does not go off?

Yesterday, my 2012 X5 was broken into. A rear window was smashed and things from the front seat and the front center console were taken. Although the car was locked, the alarm did not go off. What is the point of advertising a motion sensor in the car with the alarm, if anybody can break in, reach through half of the car, and no alarm will sound? Why did the alarm not go off?

That's very strange. When I lock my wife in the vehicle by mistake (habit) when I go grab something, I always find the vehicle raising hell on my way back, because I forget to turn off motion sensor.

Is it possible you lock your vehicle twice in succession which turns off the motion sensor? Or whatever it is that is done to turn it off..

From the manual:

Switching off tilt alarm sensor and interior motion sensor
Press the button on the remote control again as soon as the vehicle is locked. The indicator lamp comes on for approx. two seconds, then begins to flash steadily. The tilt alarm sensor and the interior motion sensor are
switched off until the next time the vehicle is unlocked and subsequently locked again.

You need to manually engage by pressing Park Assist button when parking close to someone's bumper. Not sure I would want it automatic, where it would beep every time pedestrian walks by when I am parked in front of the zebra. Or when I navigate close to an obstacle..

I have comfort access and used the door handle to lock. I could not find in the manual that this would not activate the motion sensor, in fact it states that it is equivalent to pushing the BMW button.
The car is now at the dealer to get the window replaced. The SA could not understand why the alarm would not go off.
