Thanks garrypeterson.
Anyone with experience with complete strut kit? I am thinking if I should use the entire strut kit since car is at 93k miles now. Last edited by svho; 06-05-2023 at 01:11 PM.. |

svho new strut kit as in a new spring and damper? No need to replace the springs unless they're damaged or you're trying to lower it or something. They aren't really wear items.

The box outside had number which I referenced online for either left or right, but the part itself doesn't have a number that matches the number from the box.
For E70 doesn't it matter? I hope I didn't switch by accident when I open late at night. Last edited by svho; 06-09-2023 at 03:40 AM.. |

jbash87 thanks!
Looks like I fixed the issue (clunk) with the new strut kit. I noticed the sponge like (grommet on the lower strut disappeared, probably went into chunks). Hopefully I didn't damage the axle, tried to support it but it dropped low and extended. I tried to push it back but had a difficult time. Finally at the right angle it went back in. Never changed an axle before but hopefully I didn't cause any harm. I was able to rotate the front driver wheel and it turned normal prior to lowering the car. After first attempt, the passenger side I make sure the axle didn't extend/drop. |

Glad you got it taken care of!
Axle will most likely be fine as long as there is no binding in its normal operating range. I've pinched, bound, and really abused my axles while swapping diffs and they work just fine. If you do have issues and decide to change it I would highly recommend you get the DPTool output shaft kit on amazon. It makes an incredibly frustrating/near impossible job a breeze. |

So is it worth just installing the upper strut mount support ring to see if it fixes the clunking? I guess I'm just kind of assuming that if the upper has deteriorated, then the lower one is probably deteriorated as well.

There is another one that's the one that disappears first right under the strut mount so the whole thing has to come out, spring compressed, strut mount removed and then you can install the new ones. It's a lot of work which is why is the perfect time to replace things just for the peace of mind (and not having to dismantle everything again a second time!).
