well it definitely isnt normal because I dont have the problem. not sure what could be causing it. not sure if you've seen this thread on xoutpost but he seems to have the same problem you are with the black soot http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...smell-lol.html

I read the whole thread and it seems like he went through hell to get to the bottom of it with no luck, last i heard bmw bought the car back from him and hes getting a '13 m5

A thousand thanks!!!!

Didn't know why I was also getting the soot and the truck felt a bit sluggish, but not enough to think there was an issue. I will take it to my dealer and will let you guys know how that turns out.

I bet many are like me and don't realize what has happened.

Thanks for posting!

Well, my symptoms is not as severe. The bumper area will take couple days to show slightly blacken, gas mileage good, power is good. Today the oil leve gauge did something weird, showed warning to add oil below safe level. Just the day prior there were 3/4 level. After more driving the level went back up to normal level, even more than what it was registering before. This shit is crazy, I hate this stupid electronics crap, can't they even put in a real dip stick?

rear blackening

No problem here other than occasional blackening around exhaust pipe which cleans up easily in car wash; 14k miles

You have a bad injector (s)...quote me. Tell the dealer to find it and fix it.

I have a new 30d with 5000km on her and every trip long or small it is black around the rear spoiler that surrounds the exhaust pipes. It's getting really annoying wiping it clean and sometimes polishing it every day. I thought this was a normal diesel thing but tell me if others with diesels are not getting this. My wife's 118d didn't ever have this problem.
Anyone with a X5 d with any info would be appreciated.
Cheers

Yes, it's from drippy injectors. The dealer fixed it the 1st time around (I posted that prior) and the blackening stopped for about 1 month, but came back. So I took the car to the dealer and told them it's doing the same thing, but they couldn't pull off any misfire code so they told me they couldn't do anything about it. Go figure, idiots can't fix car without a computer telling them what to do.

I've since ran 5 tanks of gas with fuel injector cleaner the blacken area is taking longer to get black, but it is still getting black after about one week. Just not as dark.

Personally I think it's because the California summer blend gas with the extra ethanol, it is causing problem with the direct injection system.
