Push it Real Good

I knew the thread title would get you in here...

So after storing my BBQ in the garage the other night, my wife and I realized it had been leaking propane from the tank into the garage (horrible smell when we went out to pack the kids into the X5). My first thought was do NOT start the X...

So, we realize we needed to push it out of the garage and down the driveway before starting it. I had never pushed it but was somewhat familiar with the process. Figured I would type it up here for anyone that has never done it, it was pretty easy.

1. Turn the vehicle on, ignition on (press start twice, no foot on the brake).
2. Grab the little red t-handle in the trunk under the floor.
3. Lift up the rubber from the cupholders in front
4. Use the t-handle to unscrew the cap in the driver's side cupholder.
5. Put your foot on the brake and release the parking brake.
6. Insert t-handle into the socket under the cupholder cap, twist counterclockwise and hold (it is spring loaded and will return if you let go).

You will notice that while holding it, the dash will show the vehicle in Neutral. Have someone push...

I didn't realize it'd be so easy. No warnings, no error messages, it actually just worked. I was surprised.

Oh, and since I'm posting this from the kitchen, clearly we didn't blow up the house, the X, or the kids! Win!

Glad you guys approve. I had always wondered how I could/would push/roll the newer BMW models, glad I know now. And glad its super easy!

It works even the car didn't start with ignition on, because it is designed for the car to be towed away from any damage on the x-drive system onto the flatbed.

Most of the tow driver should know about this.

FYI in my 2013 you cannot use this tool to manually release the transmission. Not sure when/ why bmw changed this, but it makes things much more difficult when you need your car towed from your garage.

Yes, in my 2012, I don't have the tool. But if you remove the rubber from the cupholder, you'll see the square there where the tool should be inserted in.

My cup holder has the removable cap as well. Unfortunately, if you remove the cap, there's nothing under it. It was pretty frustrating finding this out when I really needed it.

The release under the cup holder went away with the 8 speed transmission. The 35d had the 6speed till the new body style came out so they all have the release under the cup holder. For the 8 speed transmission you have to crawl under the car to put it in neutral.

That may be true, but my 2013 x5m has the 6 speed transmission and does not have the cupholder release. The dealer tech says they do have a release under the car, but it was easier to get it out using skates to help slide it out.

Ahh, skates, thats a good idea for sure... As for the new vehicles with the 8 speed, that sounds ridiculous!!
