50i ride comfort vs M version

Considering an new M version to replace the 50i I have. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the ride difference between the two?

Does the M version ride harsher ? This is our road car for trips from NorCal to SoCal and Arizona, my wife is particular about ride harshness (she likes the way the 50i we have rides)

My experience the past with 3 series the M3 beat your kidneys up but was worth it for the experience. I didn't do long trips with M3.

I have both X6 5.0 and X6M. My honest opinion, X6M has a much smoother ride and feel than the X6 5.0. BMW made it such that if you do not press the "M" button on your steering wheel (which is configurable), then you are driving a luxury SAV vehicle.

It would depend...

I believe if your 50i has adaptive drive, then the ride should be similar (assuming you have 20" wheels right now). If you do not have adaptive drive, then I suspect it will be smoother (I'm guessing that igorbmwx6 does not have it?). Obviously if you have 19" on your 50i, then the ride will be slightly worse.

You'll be equally happy with comfort in the M. I find my M to be more comfortable than my 4.8i e70 that had stock suspension... Your wife should be happy and you even more so with the increased power/handling!

That really changes the comfort level for sure.

Agree on the run flat conundrum. They really are lousy and it seems as though the lawyers at BMW won that battle.

Get rid of them

My wife doesn't like the ride at all, so she doesn't drive it unless she has to for some reason. That really breaks my heart.

Not at all...

Have fun. Be safe.

I just upgraded from an X6 5.0 without the adaptive drive to an X6M. Like you, I was worried about the ride quality. The M is much much smoother than the 5.0 to the point where I'm surprised they are essentially the same cars. So go ahead an upgrade and you won't look back.

I disagree with others on the run flats. I use the stock run flat summers during the warm months and switch to non-run flats during the winter. I like the ride of the summer tires better and don't have any issue with the quality. I do appreciate the added convenience and safety of the run flats. With so many bad roads here in NY, especially after this long winter, there are pot holes everywhere and the last thing I want to do is to get stuck on the road changing tires or waiting for the road assistance. In fact a day after I came back from the PCD Andy as driving to put my winters on on my new x6M, I hit a pot hole and my OEM tire got damaged so I had to drive 15 miles to the dealer to get it replaced. Definitely saved me at least a couple of hours of doing it myself on the side of the road and didn't ruin my day. I'm also glad I had the BMW wheel and tire insurance but that my friends is for a separate discussion.
