X5 with M package in snow
Supposed to pick up my cpo 2011 x5 with m package tomorrow. Forecast says 6 to 8 inches of snow in my area. How bad is the truck in snow with the oem bridgestones?
My plan was to get a winter setup or A/S TIRES. Obviously the weather isn't playing nice for my pickup? Thoughts? Thanks

No - they are summer only.

The XDrive will help those summer tires in the snow a little bit, you will be okay as long as you aren't going up any big hills... I still have them on my X5 but next winter I am def buying some nice Bridgestone dueler all seasons

They are brutal.....Brindgstones web site even says not to drive with them below freezing temps. I tried it for a week and it was sketchy, really sketchy.

Summer tires will turn to cement blocks below 40 deg.
Drive slow, avoid snow and get some a/s or snow tires ASAP.

Don't drive on OEM summer tires in the snow unless you are looking for kicks and giggles sliding around.
I have Blizzak LMV1 on mine and it's still a bit nerve wracking in a storm. FYI for anyone looking at snow tires, do not get the 275/40/20 recommended size by Tirerack, it is too wide and too much surface area which = more slippery. |

Be careful, as others here said, I would not recomend driving on any unplowed streets, you may be ok on major highways but definitely look to put on winter tires asap. I am assuming you have the 20s on with the summer tires, if you have the 19s then I think they come with all-weather tires.

Unlike the staggered 20s, the (non-summer) tire choices for these are very limited. There are exactly 2 options for all season tires, and zero winter tires available for this setup.

Yup, I'd say this sums it up perfectly. It can be done (and I'm just talking about picking your truck up tomorrow) give yourself PLENTY of room to stop. The one time I drove my last e70 in bad snow (with summers) I was praying the whole way home, especially braking downhill... highly recommend a dedicated snow setup

i would say delay delivery until snow stops and the streets get plowed and salted....even my all seasons were slipping a little today. if anything, drive really slow, turn even slower, leave a lot of distance between you and front car, and stick to plowed roads. GL man, i totally know the anticipation feeling of getting new car, but you def want to get her home safe!

Summer tires will get you home on dry and wet roads, but because of the cold offer limited traction. On snow or ice they are more like skis than tires. You won't be able to start, stop or turn. Good luck.

condition and age is a factor. I got caught in a surprise snow storm in Montana last October. Mountain pass, a few inches of snow, and I just took it easy and it did fine. Tires were practically new, however.
I've driven it 3 times in snow on the 'Stones and had no problems. I would excercise caution, but I don't think they're as bad as some people are making them out to be. |

Thanks I figured as much. The tires are brand new, just installed at the dealer. I erred on the side of caution for pickup this time, didn't wanna push my luck in 8 inches of snow. Hoping I can make due for February and March but if not, I'll install all seasons and sell the brand new staggered stones to offset the cost.

trade them right away for a set of conti DWS, great all season tire. You should do "ok" if you are trading brand new run flats.

Hate to split hairs but OEM Bridgestone 20" *summer* run flats are absolutely horrible in the snow and should not be used in temps less than 45-50F. Regardless of being brand new or used, the tread and compound cannot handle any snow.

I have a 2013 x5 with the m-sport with 20" wheels - you can buy 20 inch staggered winter tire on the 20 wheels - i have Pirellliis snow sports on mine and they stick like glue to the road. Great in snow. Highly recommended. I live in MN and the winter has been brutal this year but driving my X has been pure bliss. I actually bought a second set of 333 wheels to put the dedicated winter tires on.

When I've driven them in snow, they had okay grip in 3 or 4" of unplowed snow. I don't think I'd try driving in heavy snow, but occasional use? I don't see a problem as long as you're careful with stopping distances and cornering speeds. FWIW I've tried them in empty parking lots on a couple inches of snow and until you turn off the traction control, you can barely get them to break loose when the nannies are assisting. I've not tried them on ice, never had any this year. |

Please video your journey next time into anything above an inch of plowed or unplowed snow with your summer tires, it should be worth the giggles. |
