What he said. Don't over think it, just use the BMW recommended Synth Castrol, and if you can, DIY. Any high quality synthetic oil, changed on time is all you need.
Where I differ is I like to use the OE filter kit. With my CCA discount at the dealer they are only a couple bucks more than that Mann filter linked to.

I normally do the oil on all our vehicles. Makes me feel like a stud. The only reason I have not DIY'd this yet is both times it was due for a change I happened to have it at the dealer for some reason, so I just let them do it.

x2 Search the DIY...30 min tops if you have those rhino ramps. Look at getting a magnetic plug also.

I have those as well
https://www.ebay.com/sch/sis.html?_n...72.m2749.l2658

I think the OE filter is the same as the MANN HU816X but it's all personal preference. I'm sure if you looked at the OE filter from BMW, you'll see MANN stamped on it. I actually bought a 4 pack which brought the cost down a bit. They also sell a 10 pack to be even more cost effective, but since I don't drive too often, I think a 4 pack will last me at most 4 years.

Like a few that have stated here, I've always used a dealer to change my oil since I was under the free maintenance and had coupons to dealers for Oil changes. Now I'm outside of warranty/maintenance, I started doing it myself since it's cheaper to DIY than even with coupons!
I was able to change my oil without use of ramps or jack.

I've always done half the interval or between 6-8k miles since the S54 had linked long intervals to rod bearing failure. The interval just stuck with me. It was recommended to me to change the oil on the S63 every 5k miles though by the PO. I guess it depends on how you drive. I know there is some point where too frequent is pointless or bad, but 5k seems very reasonable since most synthetics recommend 5k anyway...could just want more people making more oil changes to make the companies more money though.

Ya I went a little over 5k on my first change, and have gone close to 6k already, I may do another one here soon. Probably as she rolls over 100k.

I do 10k on mine.
Stated oil change interval (on my 2012 50i anyway) was 15k when they came out, but info on here says that dealers were told to shorten it down to 10k and slightly overfill so customers don't get a 'low oil" warning anytime soon after the service was done.

Looking at the mileage I have gone and how many changes I have completed, I am closer to 10k a change. It not to big of a deal because my 50 sees a new quart of oil every 800 or so miles. I could probably do filter swaps and never drain the oil, but I cant bring myself to do that on this horsepower beast. I enjoy her to much currently.

Wow, thats a lot of oil loss! Are you sure you don't own a diesel? (oil-burner, haha)
Even more than my 1998 M3 had...

A quart every 800 miles? That seems excessive.. Leaky Valve stem seals?? Mine was using a quart every 2.5k miles, and after the valve stem seal replacement, it went to a quart every 5k miles.

Doesn't matter what it is, it more then likely is the valve seals, but until I have time/space/money/tools required to get that job done, its not getting done. The car tells me when its low, so its not like the motor will ever get hurt. Wishful me thinks it may just be a PCV issue (most likely not) or maybe even a PCV issue combined with a turbo pulling oil a little, who knows?

I am not even entirely sure about how to go an isolate those components from each other to determine what requires service. I almost wish it was a pushrod motor, then I could do the valve seals with the cylinder heads on, but at the least I would have to pull the cams to replace the seals, maybe not the cylinder heads.
