Of course, money and horse power. They are different beasts, one quick and one super quick.

If money isn't an issue for you, get the M for sure, I was told by my Indy mechanic that M series has better seals and gaskets than the regular E70

If I could have justified the price difference I certainly would have gone with the /M, but I couldn't. $20k difference on a CPO model of the same year just wasn't worth it. 50i + dinan tune isn't far behind a stock /M, and has a better torque curve to boot if I am not mistaken.
Plus I love the 8 speed ZF. Edit: it helps I have an e92 M and a money pit S4 to play with when I need to go really fast. The 50i was the best of both worlds for my budget. Last edited by rennis; 01-29-2014 at 12:40 AM.. |

OP both have their advantages. The 50 you can tune to the wazoo from Dinan and it will definitely compete with an X5M. You are also looking from a mod standpoint probably an extra 10-12k if that's something you are in to.
Yes the 50 has the ZF 8spd which is definitely nice and you will probably see a better MPG out of the 50 than the M. But I don't buy cars for their MPG. I will say I love the HUD on the X5M. Even the newer RS model Audis don't have as nice of an HUD as my 2011 X5M. Suspension wise the M will run circles around 50. Both are great cars. The X5M is just much more extreme in my view and gives the driver everything they need in a car (power, performance, steering feedback, grip, interior comfort, storage and space, etc.). I agree with one poster, I could never imagine having a better DD than the X5M. Maybe the newer model I could imagine once it comes out and gets reviews. For now if you have the money go for the M you will not be disappointed. |

Not starting a tuner war but you can do it for 10% of the $12K Dinan will charge you.
Downpipes and BMS Stage 2 (when it comes out).

OP, in response to your question, yes there is a huge difference between the two. The s63 is an absolute beast of a motor with plenty of room left on the table for improvement if that is what you are after (there are guys pushing 700hp+ out of these rigs)... If you really want to feel something special every time you get behind the wheel, then go for the M. Having owned a regular e70 (that I spruced up a bit) I can honestly say the differences between the M and non M are justified accordingly in pricing (and totally worth the extra money IMO).

The pricing was just a guess guys. Like completely just estimating in my head on the mobile App.
I've spent pretty close to 3-4k alone on the different tunes for the X5M in determining which I would like more. Granted the Dinan was deeply discounted and test for my dealer because I have spent a lot of $$ on Dinan products and labor with them and would give honest feedback. OP there are a lot of 35/50 out there. Probably less 50s. Like others have said the M feels special and I agree with that 100%. I have not owned any other E70, but I have owned a cayenne turbo(one of the first when they came out), G55 AMG, ML 55/63 AMG. This isa great car. Pre owned with low mileage you can get it for a fraction new and is well worth it. |

The 50i is still behind the M even after you tune it....not to mention if you tune the M there is no comparing the two. 50i is a great unit as well so go test drive both back to back.
