X5 50i Post CPO warranty
Does anyone have recommendations for extending warranties on a 2013 x5 50i that is approaching end of CPO warranty? I cannot find a straight answer from BMW and a few places I have asked for quotes won't cover the x5.
Only 65k miles but the thought of owning without warranty is unsettling. |

Your right at the mileage when the big repair bills will hit. Typically you'll need valve stem seals, most engine bay plastic items replaced, and oil leaks. There is a reason a lot of places wont warranty any X5, as they age they take a lot of money to keep on the road.
I would not own a 50i out of warranty if you can't repair it yourself. Sure an indy can drive down the cost, but valve stem seals are minimum $2500 most places more like 3K. Rear main seal 2K, etc. I have an AutoNation gold extended warranty on my 2011 X5M. Worth its weight in gold. Its covered already more than 2x what I paid for it. |

Such an amazing car... maybe time to let go of this dream since I no longer have time for project cars.
Most places I've called just won't do coverage for x5. Found a dealer doing core engine and transmission (but excludes common issues like the valve gaskets) so doesn't actually seem worthwhile. |

It may be difficult to find one through the secondary market - you might check with a dealer if you have any good connections, or maybe try an independent BMW repair shop to see if they have any recommendations.
When I was looking to purchase my 2010 X6M, I got a quote from Endurance Direct - $5,670 for 2yr/24k or $6,581 for 3yr/30k, both Exclusionary. I ended up going with a non-exclusionary plan through the dealer that was $4,410 for 48mo/48k. It's been a pain though for coverages - they only covered a portion of one repair (I guess some is better than none) and didn't cover the air spring. The alternative is to self-insure and enjoy the hell out of it. |

Exclusionary is the only option for an aftermarket warranty. Otherwise, you’ll be fighting tooth and nail every single time, with regret.

Is maintaining a 50i M Sport really that heinous?!
I'm keen on purchasing one that is available in my area and after researching, it seems more prudent to budget for repairs rather than dealing with a warranty that may not cover common issues. |

As the saying goes there is no such thing as a cheap bmw.
I’ve owned multiple x5s, once they get beyond about 6 years old they are generally 5-9k a year to keep repaired. Really not joking these are not cars for the faint of heart. In my case the extended warranty has paid more than 2x in repairs compared to what it cost. I love them and enjoy driving them. But if you don’t and you worry about spending thousands a year to keep them going it’s not for you. Heck a set of tires for my x5m is about 1300 and they last about 1year or 12k miles. Brake pads at the dealer are 1400. You get the idea, the 50i is less expensive but not cheap, Why do you think they go for so cheap when the warranty is up? Why can you buy a 5 year old car that cost 80k new, for 25? Because it’s a high maintenance car. If you want cheap, a don’t buy an suv, b don’t buy an old luxury car without a warranty if you want to keep it in good shape. Or just don’t worry and enjoy it, |

I think there’s something to be said for cars that aren’t driven all the time and have lower miles. My ‘11 35i (which I know isn’t the engine specifically referenced) has been zero maintenance outside of routine. It has 57k relatively easy miles. As a comparison, my brother’s ‘13 35i was driven hard in the city by his wife. Things started getting expensive @ 70k miles, and he just traded for an ‘18, same engine. Keep in mind, regardless of engine, you mostly hear about bad stuff on the forums. There are an untold number of problem-free stories you never hear of, which probably far outnumber the negative.

The N63 are really bad engines for reliability. Those who don't need expensive repairs like valve stems etc. are a minority at > 70K miles. Even my service adivsors and indy recommand against an N63. Even after the customer care packages. https://oppositelock.kinja.com/bmw-n...ble-1705170612 https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cul...ns-bmw-n63-v8/ https://www.autoevolution.com/news/b...ems-88225.html |

With that said, at some point I will get into something newer, but what? If another X5, the I6 is more appealing from a reliability stand point, but I know I'd be disappointed in it's performance after having at TT V8. My wife really likes the Lexus RX350, but man that thing is a complete turd even with 295 HP |

Update: went to the BMW dealership that had the 50i M Sport today and when I got there, they said they had found a major engine problem and are no longer selling it. So now I'm looking for a X5 35i... I'm quite impressed with the dealer for pulling it off the market.

Lots of 35i's out there for sale. I'd personally choose a 2012 or 2013 - you get the LED halos and the packages were configured in 2012, more stuff is standard. |

I like the v8s myself. I’ve owned 2x e70 v8s, the 4.8i and M s63. I like the sound and I like the power and have always found the inline 6 gas to be lacking. Especially during passing maneuvers.
But they have not been cheap to own. Though the s63 in the m while very similar to the n63 has a reputation for being more reliable. (Not sure if in my experience it’s true, it has different issues). But I enjoy the power and sound of the v8. I wouldn’t hesitate on a 50i that has an extended warranty or has had ccp, valve stem seals done, alternaor and most engine bay plastics replaced. I would say the diesel with emissions deletes is probably the most reliable and most fun to drive of the non v8s. The 35i isn’t a bad engine either, and can be tuned easily like the diesel. |
