Advice Needed on X5M Purchase - Please

First post, maybe many more to come.

Considering an X5M as a daily driver, coming from a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. No stranger to German or high performance/boosted vehicles, currently have an E55 in the garage that is modified to the gills.

2012, 59k, no existing warranty, new tires, overall very good condition, black sapphire metallic, black interior, 2 owner, clean Carfax, etc.

VIN: 5YMGY0C51CLK27738

Asking price: $38,000 (can get them down to $37k or maaaaybe slightly less)

Here's my qualms about the truck:

1. There are no service records available. Convenient assumption is that the truck was fairly well taken care of given it's overall condition, the way it drives and the fact that it hasn't been outside of warranty very long.

2. All 4 wheels are slightly curbed. Not a deal-breaker but annoying nonetheless.

3. Selling dealership quoted me $5400 for 3yrs/36k extended warranty, $100 deductible. Have no idea if this is a reasonable figure. I have researched my a$$ off and can't seem to nail down a company to use and get a decent rate. Would like maybe 4yrs/48k but don't want to spend $7k

I would keep this truck for 2.5-3 years and I'd likely put 12-13.5k miles/year on it. I'd almost definitely tune it. I fully understand that this truck is fairly impractical compared to my Jeep and that it's much more of a want than a need but these things are pretty wild and I'm very intrigued at the prospect of driving around in an AWD, 700hp (modded) SUV. I did a fair amount of research regarding the injector recall, etc.

Any thoughts guys?

I am in the same boat and am following this thread. I want an SUV and trying to decide if I want to sell my e46 M3 to get into a fun SUV. I also am interested in extended warranty and service advice.

This should be reason enough to get an X5M

I'd say if you can turn a wrench you will be OK. I'd keep a savings incase something major should pop up. Obviously having service records would be preferred.

How is it impractical compared to your Jeep GC? If anything I find the M is the best of both worlds. I get a sports car feel and throw on a set of winter wheels with snows and I get a winter driver. No need for two vehicles.

I left Jeep back in 2000 and never looked back.

I have a '13 with 50k and no major service issues. The only out of pocket expense so far has been spark plugs and two coils, well tires too.

You can be fairly certain that the service record is good. People who put out the cheddar for these trucks usually take care of them.

Surprised that you local BMW dealer can't pull up the service history though.

I am fairly handy. Certainly apt enough to do brakes, spark plug/fluid changes, diagnosis, etc.

Perhaps 'impractical' was the wrong choice of words. I'm definitely leaning towards getting the truck if I can iron out the warranty. Thanks for your comment.

Does anyone know how old of a vehicle you can get an extended warranty on? I'm looking at getting a 2010 x5m

You can definitely get a warranty for a 2010. When I bought my E55, which is an '06, I even found some options for it through Fidelity.

I don't think the warranty is worth it. Highly unlikely you will spend even half that amount on repairs over 3 yrs.

Cars are bulletproof for the most part. With that said, even one major failure and it can be very expensive.

I would buy a Carchex warranty. You can put a bit of money down and finance the rest over 18 months at 0% interest. It's worth it. Trust me. If you sell the car in the mean time, you stop paying it. If you pay it off and then you sell, they'll refund your money prorated based on term.

You guys that drive these trucks without a warranty are brave. Balls of steel.

Vazha, do you mean bulletproof throughout or more so just the drive-train? What concerns me is the electronics/sensors, etc. mostly. You can wrack up thousands quickly chasing those gremlins.

I think they are solid through and through. I've had mine for a year, still have under 40K miles so I've been lucky not to have any problems.

I have tried to sell it but didn't get my numbers so I decided to keep her. Still have just under 40K miles but I'm not worried about going to 50-60 armed with a warranty that will last me to 105 and 2020!
