X5M Interior
Just ordered a 2013 X5M but dealer did not have one in stock to view. Ordered standard blac/black merino leather. What's the difference between this and "full merino leather"?

Its hidden on the BMW website, but there is an e-brochure (html or PDF) that you can download for the x5m/x6m that discusses the various options. Ref page 31-33, the extended leather (base) footnote says "leather upholstery includes all seating surfaces, headrests, door arm and front center console armrest." Full Merino leather (upgrade) footnote says "includes Nappa leather dashboard and center console." I found this document the other day looking for the standard torque/hp graph.

Thanks for the replies. So, is the only difference the Leather dash and console? Is the seat insert itself any different? I saw some interior pictures through a google search and the seat part looked like some sort of brushed suede insert instead of leather? I don't want to change my order just for the console and dash, but if the seat is not all leather than I likely will and can't figure it out. Thanks

If you care about look & feel, definitely get the full leather option. If you don't, get it, your dashboard will be made out of cheap looking plastic with texture that imitates leather.

It also adds the bottom of doors. It's only available with the Full Merino option on M's. I've seen a couple X5M/X6M with Full Merino and the bottom of the door is definitely wrapped with nappa. On mine, with Nappa + Dash, I only get the top of the door.

Not a leather dash fan
I was told by the dealer that I was required to get the full Merino in order to get the high end seat option with ventilation and ten thousand way adjustment capability. That high end seat option IMO is a must have. Am not sure the full Merino was needed as a condition of getting the tush motor (which is a nice option or long drives).
Frankly the full Merino is nice but I asked if they would give me the standard "plastic" dashboard instead of the Marino leather on the dash. I have a 13 year old E38 740 with 215k miles and it has the same "plastic" dash and is in wonderful shape despite the hot sun its been exposed to. I dont really know how long the leather dash will last on my X5M but probably not as long as the "plastic" would if you could get that. And thee "plastic" dash doesnt look bad at all to me. You might ask the dealer if they will do for you what they wouldn't do for me if you share my thought on the potential for issues with a leather dash. Hey guys Do any of you know of anyone who has had a leather dash on any vehicle for over 5 years or so with good experience with it? |

I agree entirely. I was concerned about how the leather dash would hold up in the sun. In my case, the "full merino" only added leather on the dash, center console and doors. Didn't seem worth the $3800 price tag or the risk of sun wear. This is my third consecutive X5 since 2002 and the plastic held up fine and looks good to me too. Dealer could not answer my question if would hold,up to sun over 5 yrs as no experience with that yet.

The leather dash looks so much better than the plastic one and makes the interior so much nicer, it is worth the risk. Night and day difference to me. If I was to keep this for 5 yrs and the dash started to look bad, it would still be worth it to replace it and have a new one.

It's probably different leather, however my old x35d had a black leather dash and I had to park it outside often in the summer. I had it for 3 years, can't comment on 5. However, after 3 years it still looked great with no bubbles, wasn't pulling apart, and was still shiny. I treated the dash with McGuires about every three months.

Hi, I just picked up a 2011 X5M and it has the plastic dash. I much preferred the leather however I got a great deal one with 30K miles, carbon interior, GSM on black interior, I could not refuse.
Anyhow, I don't care for the doors (mine are wrapped in the leather I think?) but I do care about the dash. Would there be a way to replace the dash with the leather? I plan to own this car for at least 2-3 years and it's something I think I would enjoy very much. Thanks! |

You can surely replace the dash with the leather option, but for how much? vs. getting it wrapped at a local leather place.
The merino was an absolute must for me for the seats. Ventilated, more adjustment and the active driver seat. The dash was an added bonus. I do agree that it completely changes the look and feel of the vehicle. It REALLY stands out on the brown leather interior, but I have black and it still does the trick. |
