So this started out with me driving to work in the rain… x5 dies on me completely and I have to pull of the side of the road, thankfully I could pull into the local fire station. Pull out my scan tool and get two injector codes 4b94 & 4b99, both seemed to do with a short on injector plug. Check the engine bay and everything was dry. Disconnected the battery and scanned again now I got a dde no communication. Instantly my heart sank and I pulled all the trim pieces off and the dde cover to find the box HALF FULL with water. DDE is now fried and I had to get towed which was it's own adventure….

Thankfully I bought a spare dde and was using that, so I had my stock x5 dde still. Shout out to BRR for being SUPER accommodating and I got my stock dde to him and he tuned it on very short notice.

So my original thought was either leaking engine partition's or clogged roof drain on front drivers side. Decided to remove the fender liner to check from the bottom and I was wrong about both. Not sure if it's just a 35d thing but we have another plastic cover below our dde with, yes, another drain. Mine was clogged with dirt and debris and water was backing up in that area eventually finding it's way into my dde box.

Everyone with an x5 35d please do yourself a favor and check this drain to be sure it's cleared and draining properly. I decided after pulling mine out that I'd order a new one (part # 51747161746) since the gasket around it was torn and falling off, not to mention the plastic was starting to dry rot and had signs of cracking.

Thanks for the heads-up. I must admit to not knowing where my DDE is housed... is that pic taken from under the car, on the LH-side (ref to facing forward)?
