Same here on my 12 diesel. I have ordered the see-through mesh for the passenger side, from 50i.

FYI - getbmwparts.com has the replacement grill for $31.43. They just pull out and pop in. |

The diesel has the DEF reservoir/pump on the passenger side behind that mesh, that's why it's hidden behind a solid piece. I hope it can take some extra dust. I popped the grill out when I was changing my fogs and it doesn't look that bad to me.

Maybe there is a way to snap in the new grill and still block the duct behind it...will investigate and report back at some point : ) |

Just pull and it will pop out. You can kind of work it around the perimeter to snap out the various tabs.
